I need to replace my driver.  I built a second set of clubs to keep at my in laws house in Florida and have sent my old driver down to live with it.  I am in the market for a replacement driver but being the budget golfer that I am, am only really considering used clubs.  I currently game a Nickent 3dx draw based 11 deg driver with a UST pro Gold 65 shaft in it.

I am looking for one of the newer square drivers to help hit the ball straight.  Top on my list are the Callaway FTiQ and the Nike SQ machspeed drivers.  I don't know my swing speed but I typically hit a driver around 250~260 and play a 7 iron from 150.  I currently play a regular flex shaft in my driver and it works well.  I have a tendency to fade the ball.

So with that in mind, I am looking for a 10.5'ish' driver with a shaft suited to my swing speed.

Somebody on another forum is offering me a SQ Machspeed 9.5 with a project X 6.0 shaft for a fair price.  My question is would that shaft work for me?  He also has a Voodoo stiff if I want that shaft instead.

He says the SQ hits it a little higher so the 9.5 would still work for me and the stiff flex shafts are both on the weaker side.  So I turn to you, ole wise SandTrap, is this a good fit for me?

Square drivers won't make you hit the ball straighter.

That was a marketing gimmick that has come and gone, unfortunately.

Noone can tell what club is right for you without seeing you hit the ball.

You can buy drivers so cheaply on ebay you should buy a few. Just resell the ones you don't want. You might even make a little money.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I can't afford to buy a few at the same time,  I can however afford to buy one and if I don't like it sell it and buy another.

Honestly, I play 90's golf and honestly don't notice much of a difference between one club and another. While I firmly believe that 2011's club is better than 2010 and 2012 is better than both of those, if I can get 2010's club for $50 and play an extra few rounds of golf with it, that is way better than the 2012 that will cost $200.  If for no other reason than the $150 increase is $150 less to spend on greens fees.

I remember hitting the FTiQ and the Cleveland hibore back in the day and liking them both.  I also remember hitting the taylor made and like that as well.  So to be honest, I could probably put a shovel head on the bottom of a graphite shaft and be happy.

Thank you

*update*

Today I finally made it over to Golf Galaxy.  Being left handed my options are a little limited but I asked the guy to give me every driver they had @ $200 and under.

I tried the Burner Superfast @ $130; Burner 2.0 (white) @ $200; The Ping G15 @ $200; used Clevland Launcher DST @ $54; and an Adams Speedline @ $200.

I ended up buying the Cleveland.  I hit each club 3-5 times and liked the Burner Superfast and the Cleveland the best.  All of the drivers showed that I had a slight draw to my shot (I suspect it doesn't take spin into affect as I generally have a slight fade) and distance wise the simulator was showing most of the drives to carry around 255 with a total distance somewhere just south of 280.

I hit the longest drive with the Burner but felt the Cleveland felt the most solid in my hand and at $54 used including the head cover it was hard to justify 1-2 yards when it equals 2-3 rounds of golf in price difference.

I didn't like the ping g15 as it felt very whippy, and the Adams I was pushing every show to the left (left handed).

Weather permitting I am hoping to go to the range and hit a small bucket with it and the new 5 wood that I picked up (Ping G10 also used) to see how they replace the clubs that got left in Florida (Nickent driver and Sonartec 5 wood)

I didn't have alot to choose from at the store and I ended up with a 9 degree driver which is the lowest loft I have ever had, so we will see how that works in actual practice.

Results to follow tomorrow or tuesday.

A Project X 6.0 shaft is going to be stiff, not regular. Can you hit the driver first to check it out?

I actually went a different direction.  I went to Golf Galaxy and found a Cleveland Launcher DST /w stiff shaft that actually worked for me.  Distance and grouping were very good and the club felt every bit as solid as all of the other drivers they had to hit in the store.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
