Having been back playing regular just over a year, one of my goals for the 2012 was to get my handicap down to single digits. The way I played during the winter I thought this may take a while. Well, spring arrived early and so did my swing, after a couple of lessons to make sure everything was in line my scores started to really drop. After last weekends rounds my handicap dropped to 9.7, at least that's what the DiabloGolf handicap tracking app has me rated for my last 86 rounds. I guess it time to sign up and get legit with the USGA.

Congrats!  It is a good feeling when you work hard and improve.  I am close too!  Did you work more on the swing or short game?

I started with the driver and hitting more fairways, then from there hitting more greens. I've always been a pretty good putter, but my short game is where I need work now. Inside 40-50 yards and especially chipping I've got a lot of work that needs to be done. Seems like I throw away several shots around the green each round.

Congrats!  Great to hear getting some lessons helped too.  What did your instructor have you working on?

Also, I agree with your process of improvement too... Working from Tee to Green is better than working backwards IMO.  The more fairways and greens you hit... The easier the game becomes.  It's kind of like this Nike commercial...

Thanks guys, it feels good to reach a goal, especially this early in the season. Next step is to get to 8 and then go from there.

Not working on anything major, just a couple of small things. Before the last lesson my miss with the driver was to the right, and I normally never miss right. He had me move my ball position just slightly forward but more importantly raise my hands just a bit at address and then close the swing with my hands. I hand kinda already figured out I was sometimes quiting with my hand and not rotating through, but he said by having my hands higher would help me not to get stuck and hit the ball right. I also used a tip that mvmac suggested that's a S&T move have my hand and hip ahead of the ball at address. I think this position helps eliminate any unwanted side to side movement and puts me in the same spot at address and impact everytime.

As far as my irons, after the lesson previous to this past one I bought a Tour Striker training iron and had been using that some, hitting a few balls into my net at home everyday and I would hit a few with it during a range visits as well. It's really helped to get the club in the slot on the downswing and my ballstriking has greatly improved. At my last lesson I was warming up hitting some 7 irons when my instructor walked up and commented on how much he liked my positions with the irons.

I think my next lesson will be spent all on the short game

This might have been the single best thing you did to improve your ball striking.  Good job!

    • that is an excellent approach. I did that with my last set. I made a few 7 irons from different heads and shafts. Getting a feel for how they play on the course is the right idea. Let us know how it goes.
    • I’m glad the USGA booted some of the hecklers. It’s getting out of hand. I wish the networks wouldn’t mic the crowd to give those idiots a platform.
    • New member here, and I have decided to upgrade my clubs. I have been playing for a long time but these last 10 years I have had to put four kids through college. So I've played a few rounds a year and some years have not played at all. I am currently playing Titleist 716 AP2's with Rifle 6.5 steel shafts and Winn grips. I used to hit my 7 iron around 165 yds until just 5 years ago. I turned 62 this year and noticed I can barely get my 7 iron to 145 yds. I went for a fitting to try out some new player distance irons. I don't think I need game improvement irons because I'm pretty straight and rarely try to work a ball (if I'm working a ball, then I most definetely did something wrong to get there). I tried a bunch of irons (Callaway, Mizuno, PXG, Taylormade, Srixon, Ping, and Titleist) and I kept coming back to the Ping and Titleist. They just felt right and really looked good when lining up a shot. The Ping, by far, went the longest of all the irons. The Titleist was a close second in distance. Both felt buttery smooth through impact. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with these irons. I was getting 160 yds with a nice smooth swing (81 mph swing speed). I know I'm asking a lot of my clubs but my last fitting was 27 years ago and I ended up with some Cleveland TA3's or TA2's forged irons with Dynamic Gold S300 (swing speed 87 mph). I really love the feel of my AP2's and the place I'm going to purchase from is going to make a 7 iron in both Ping and Titleist for me to test on real grass. I'm pretty certain it's going to be either one. They're both identical in price for a set of 5-PW. I'm going to forego a 4 iron and get another 4 hybrid to go along with my 3 hybrid. Any and all replies are welcome.
    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
    • Day 291 6-22 full, faster swings, focusing on low point, missing towel. Recorded some face on and dtl. Practicing full speed changes is something I wasn't doing enough.
