I'm just wondering do people find much of an advantage in employing a full swing with short-mid irons over and above taking an extra club and doing a 3/4 swing?

In my experience I appear to be sacrificing the superior accuracy, timing and contact that I would be assured in a 3/4 swing by taking the more lofted club and performing a full swing.

What is compounding this issue for me is that I seem to be able to generate the same power from 3/4 swings as full swings for low to medium irons. I can only conclude that the advantage of taking the club back further- at least where short irons are concerned- does not afford me the opportunity to generate extra club head speed- over an above what I can achieve with a 3/4 swing.

Like you said, a 3/4 swing often times doesn`t sacrifice much distance.  I tend to overswing with my hands, so like to be able to feel like I am making a solid 3/4 swing, especially with the shorter clubs.

I would rather take the next club down than hit a 3/4 shot, unless I need a low ball flight then I just punch it. I prefer taking full swings.

I have trouble taking 3/4 swings.  What I do instead is choke down about an inch and take a full swing and it'll take off about 5 yds. Most of my irons have about 10yds difference between them, so its nice to be able to choke down and do that.  According to others, I look like I swing "hard," but when I try to swing "soft," I fail miserably and everything goes wrong.  So, I always like to take  a full swing, whenever possible.
