12 years of atrophy was too much to overcome. I tool it slow & easy for 2 months, chipping, putting then half shots only at 80mph.

One session at full speed did me in, if you call 96 mph full speed. I can't even tie my shoes, and oxy does not even touch the pain. Another spinal epidural next week.

I really thought the 68 lb weight loss would be enough to help my body heal.

Yep, I'm as low as I have ever been. God I love the game and will miss it so much.

Thanks to my old golf buddies that put up with me through my attempt to come back.

Bummer, I wish you well. Any chance you can still enjoy the game with less effort? I have a 68 yr old buddy that has severe ailments and he keeps at it on the junior par 3. I'm out there with him, as are others.

That's possible. I have always been blessed with a short game, and my 100 and in game came back really quick. I still use the 8813 I bought in 64. I can hardly bend down to putt. There is one par 3, 45 minutes away.

No clue if they have any activities.

Sorry for your suffering.  Have you had your spine looked at before?  What kind of damage are we talking about?  I am "only" 38, but I have a pretty severe disc compression in L4/L5, and virtually no disc at all for L5/S1.  I find that stretching makes a big difference, especially hamstrings/glutes and groin stretches.

Wish you the best of luck in your attempts to come back.  Hopefully it's just a strain.

I think Dave2512 has the right idea...If I was in your body, I think I would stick with the short game and see how it goes- It took you 12 years to atrophy, so don`t expect to get back in shape in only 2 months...see how the short game goes for the next 3-12 months and then give the long game another shot if you are feeling up to it.

Don't give up......

I play with a group of seniors during the week...............one is 84: he obviously has his health issues too, but still manages to enjoy the game. He also shoots his age in spite of them....he impresses the hell out of me.  I hope to be alive at 84!!   I play with another guy who is 75.....he shoots his age nearly every week.   Impressive.....  And you are b!tching about 96mph clubhead speed?  LOL.............c'mon!!!   Stop whining and suck it up.........and play!!   Plenty of guys in their 20s-30's don't make 96mph clubhead speed.

.............so you joined the forum 4/2012 to announce you are quitting the game?   I don't think so!!!!!!

All of my joints are degenerative since I was 48. I get a spinal epidural every 3 months. That gives me relief for 6 weeks max in the summer. 4 injections a year is the max. I took Vioxx and lost 40% of my kidney function, so oral meds are out.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
