For the past year, I have been working with the big brother program. The kid i'm working with, Caleb, comes from a rough upbringing, and has never had a father figure in his life.

When I first got involved, I was really, really nervous. I mean you never know who your going to get, how difficult it will be to get through to them, etc etc.

When I met Caleb, he wasn't at all a bad kid. He was a bit misguided, and never had a strong male figure in his life, but at 9, he had a big heart and a lot of talent that nobody had taken the time to try to hone.

After spending last winner teaching Caleb to skate, I bought hima set of Junior golf clubs, and got him out playing golf. On tuesday nights, he takes lessons with other kids around his age, and on Saturday mornings, we go out to the local 9 hole muni, I rent us a cart, and we play golf.

Calebs determination, as well as his ability to absorb what he's taught., just amazes me. Its unbelievable how fast he is learning the game. His swing is better than I would have ever expected for a child his age, and he takes a great deal of pride in playing from all the lies he creates for himself, as well as wanting bto know all the rules (his hypothetical questions are as whacky as some i've seen here. I didnt even think kids understood 'hypothetical'). His mom says he watches golf any chance he gets.

Anyway, what im getting at is this. As golfers, most of us have a bit of disposable income. If you have the time, the money, and the means, I would strongly reccomend getting involved with the big brother program and getting involved in an activity with your little bro. Its the amazing how much of a profound effect you can have on the life of a child who didnt have the opportunities that many of us had growing up. It doesnt need to be golf, but anything that helps them build confidence in every day life, as well as in sport.

Every boy needs a strong, ethical male influence, and your weekly dedication to a child could forever change his life. So please, get out there and support the program. Take a day a week out of your life, and change someone elses. On the golf course and off.

This is awesome. I wish I had the extra money to invest in a kid for golf, it's so expensive and I don't make a lot of money.

But there are some of you out there who prefer to curse and drink til you drop on the course...you gentlemen just move along, nothing to see here.

It is great. Its funny knowing that he's almost ten, and if I can keep him interested and on the straight and narrow, we'll be having 'real' competion on the course in four or five years.

Right now, I let him play the whole hole ONLY if there is nobody behind us. If there are people behind us, he gets a drive, and an iron shot. Then he picks up, comes with me. As we get to the green, he gets one wedge shot to try to get it on the green, then I let him putt out from wherever his wedge shot is closest to the green. He is doing great.

The set I got him had no wedge, so I cut down a Cleveland 588 52 and 56, and wrapped them. He's pretty good with those clubs. Cant wait till he can play 18 for real.

Caleb and were supposed to play today, but we got rained out while practicing on and around the practice greens. But, I did have the funniest moment ever with a child today.

He and i usually have some kind of little contest when practicing before our 'match'. Today the contest was to sink 5 balls, from 5 feet, with the least amount of strokes. The prize is usually an Ice Cream after the round, or whatever. I always make sure he wins, of course. Its great for his confidence and nice to see his smile.

Anyway, on the 4th ball he three putted, so I decided to 4 putt, as we were all tied up to that point. When I missed my 4th (yes, I really missed that shot, not on purpose, from about 18 inches), I looked at him and said, 'My ball just wont go in the hole'.

He just looks up to me, serious as can be, and says, 'Maybe your ball is gay'.

I was, at first, shocked that he understood both what gay meant, and what sex was. But still, I could not stop myself from laughing like a moron.

I think he has shown that he doesn't know what "gay" means and, sadly, it says a lot about his upbringing.

You had a chance there to do ANYTHING but laugh.

Tough spot he put you in there.

It has nothing to do with upbringing. Not that im saying his was the best, but EVERY kid in school nowadays knows more about sex before age 10 than is at all healthy. Kids being curious has nothing to do with bad upbringing.

My point isthat he has learnt what homophobes think "gay" means.

Fair enough. But I did explain things to him after I was done laughing, as well as that while I laughed, he shouldn't say things like that, and that gay people are no different than anyone else. I didnt just laugh and leave it at that. I was just passing along a funny statement from a child. Nothing more, nothing less.

Tonight is lesson night for Caleb. They had to cancel. it Tuesday due to rain, (Thursday is set as alternate Tykes Tee's golf night). It is awesome to see him improve all the time. Not just him, but all the kids who play in Tyke's Tee's are doing so well. Im yet to see a single one of them leave the range without a smile on their face. I strongly suggest that if you have ids, get them involved in a program like this. Most courses not only have a program like this, but its also usually free, including range balls. (Donations are accepted) The program at my course even has multiple sets of clubs for children who's parents maybe can't afford them for whatever reason.

I just got involved in BBBS this past year, back in January I think.  It's been a great experience so far.  My little brother has shown some interest in golf, but unfortunately I don't currently have enough disposable income to get him a set.  I'm a member at a small par 3 course near my house ($29/month for unlimited golf for everyone in my household) so I think I'll ask them next time I'm in what their policy on BBBS is.  If they will bend the rules a bit and consider him to be in my household, I will probably see if he is interested in getting a kid's set of clubs and if he is scrape enough money together to get him some clubs and take him there to play.

But Apoc, I totally agree that the program is awesome.  I've really enjoyed my time with my little brother, and I'm glad I volunteered.

If he is I will gladly paypal you $10 or more if I can at the time to getting him some clubs. 3balls has a ping set for 89. I few other guys would probably chip in too.

I would be happy to chip in to help your little brother get some golf clubs.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
