I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this in, but i was wondering back in the day when Harry Vardon was playing how long were golf courses then.

It's a good question. I figured the best chance might be to look up the yardages for the 1913 U.S. Open at Brookline, because it's well publicized, but a quick Googling didn't return actual yardages.

Though I did find a PDF of the original article written back in the day in the sports pages showing his win.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

4,423 yards — Shinnecock Hills G.C., Southampton, N.Y., 1896

That is the only official distance for an old course I can seem to find. Though it seems 6000+yards only came around after WW2.

From Wikipedia on Chicago Golf Club, "in 1894, the members bought a piece of property to build an improved 18-hole course. They purchased a 200-acre (0.81 km 2 ) parcel of the Patrick farm in Wheaton, for a then-considerable sum of $28,000, which became "a first class 18-hole course of 6,500 yards."

Charles Haskell patented the rubber-core golf ball in 1898. Two years later....

The Goodrich Rubber Company patents a machine for winding the rubber threads around the core of a Haskell ball. Mass production of Haskell balls begins, and gutta percha balls ("gutties") fade out.

A golfer named Lancelot Servos wins a long drive competition at a pro event in Tampa, Fla., with a blast of 230 yards.

Spalding increases durability of the Haskell golf balls in 1903 by using balata as a cover rather than gutta percha (AboutGolf.com, 1903).

Dimples start appearing on golf balls, making them fly higher and farther. (AboutGolf.com, 1905)

Between the Haskell golf ball and the introduction of dimples, the ball is going a lot farther. I read somewhere - can't find the source, of course - that Oakmont C.C. near Philadelphia was built to 6,900 yards in the early 1900s to counter the changes in the ball.

      Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.

      Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
