i was having a hard time today, went 7 over in the first 6 holes (5 bogeys, and 1 double), i just couldn't stop cutting the ball, i couldn't chip, i couldn't putt. Then i came to my 3rd shot on the par 5 number 6 (i bogey this hole). i had about 165 uphill, and i had to hit it above a small tree infront of me. So i think, ok usually 1.5 clubs uphill, pin in the back. don't want to go right, thats death, and you can get good kicks on the green on the left side of the green. So, i take out my 7 iron, and play the ball up in my stance more, and try to hit a fade off the trees going up the left side of the green. I hit the ball, i hit a few leaves on the tree infront of me, cost me about 10 yards on the shot. I end up about 3 yards from the front left of the green, but i found myself very comfortable with the set up, and the shot. so i say, what the hell, why not just try this out the rest of the way, just hit high cuts. So my next drive, i tee the ball forward, and i pound the ball, next shot i over club, but hit a good shot. I end up paring out. I found out that i hit the ball better when the ball is more forward in my stance than i though. I think my perception of were the ball in my stance is off. This seems to set me up behind the ball more, and my shoulders tilted so my left is above my right. It moves my hands a bit more forward, were the butt end of the club is pointing at my left thigh. But i was hitting great shots, i was still able to hit the ball first, really release well, and the ball trajectory was much more boring.

So if people are having trouble with hitting fat shots, or cuts, maybe move the ball forward in the stance a bit. Its something to try out. I think the ball being back in my stance, i was trying to compensate for that by doing some bad things in my swing.

I am going to have to agree. Im a novice golfer who is happy to shoot in the 80's . I recently had a lesson from a pro and I wanted to focus mainly on my irons with him. He gave me alot of pointers and noted that I should place the ball further back in my stance. Around 50/50 in the stance. I noticed I was hitting the ball better off a tee but when it came to on the ground shots I would often club the ground alot with the ball as far back as he was suggesting. Today at the range I was practicing his teaching and struggled mightily so I move it back up toward the front of my stance with a bit more distance away from the ball and noticed alot of improvement. Its becoming real aggravating tho because I have no idea now what I should stick with. My irons give me incredible issues all the time.
