Hey all,

On the course I play league there are two par 3's that run 185-190 yards depending on placement.  Well I have a gap in my play that I was hoping I could pick up a hybrid up to fit those yardage totals.

I hit my

6 iron about 160

5 iron 170

4 iron 180

5 wood 215

I have a three iron but it has a vibration in it and I just hate hitting it...I only keep it in my bag for punching out low should I need it.

So my question is....based on my other clubs do you think a hybrid could help me fill that  gap.  I've never used one and I don't know what to expect as far as yardage and I see them in 18" 21" 24 (2,3,4). So I have no idea what direction I should go.....   Unfortunately I really don't have anyplace local I can go demo a few.  Obviously I will before I buy but....

OR should I just go buy a replacement for my 3 iron and go that route?

Had a gap in my clubs to, I never could hit the 3 or 4 very well. Hated using them. Friend of mine picked up a hybrid set, 3 & 4. He let me try them out a few times while we played. I loved them and ended up picking up a set for myself.

Just ordered a set of Callaway Razor HL's with the 3 & 4 hybrids and 5 thru Pitch irons. They should be in in a week or so. A lot of the guys I have played with have asked to try my hybrids, most end up buying at least one.

so do you think I should expect to hit a 4hybrid similar distance to my 4iron?  if so a 3 hybrid would help me fill the gap but I hit my irons so well that perhaps I should just pick up a replacement 3 iron.  I just don't want to buy a 3 when what I really need is a 4 or 5 hybrid.

btw, my 1-3-5 woods are the Callaway razr x black versions and I love them

A couple of things you could do...

Try a 7-wood. Does the model 5W you hit make a 7W?

Test out some hybrids. If you can hit them, find the one which fits the gap best.

Most hybrids fall between FWs and numbered irons in shaft length. So you have to test them out to find the one which goes the right distance. Some hybrid models have a draw bias, so if you hook them, check out an H with a pro or tour head (very little offset).

Take this for what it's worth as I am a poor swinger, but I hit a 25* Adams idea 5H about 170-175 yds; I can't hit a 5i more than about 150 yds. As stated earlier, it's best to borrow or get one on loan so you can check it out for your swing

I am the same. I hit my hybrids about 10 yrds father than I "should" be able to hit the same iron.

If I were you I'd get a 3H and a 4H.  If you can only get one right now get the 3H.  You should expect to hit them higher and about 10 yards further than the corresponding irons.

I tested a 19* Adams super hybrid xtd and this thing was long. Too long for my set as it was only 10 or 15 yards shorter than my RBZ 3HL. I had to go with a 22* although I have a 23* Mashie. Certain hybrids I find a lot longer than others based on shafts and design. OP Test them all to find one that works for you. I suggest buying some used clubs from 3balls.com as they have a 30day free shipping back return policy. I would suggest starting with a cleveland mashie, they have a good shaft and start at only $50 on 3balls.

You pretty much stated my yardages exactly and I too have that gap. I have tested some hybrids but honestly I don't like them. I'm sure I could get use to them but I just don't like the feel plus I would have to drop a wedge and its seems wrong to replace a scoring club with a 200yd club.

What I have done is worked on my 4 iron (I don't even have a 3) such that I can hit 2 shots. One is the normal smooth 85-90% that give me 185ish. The other is a bigger swing, going at it 95-100%, setting up a little further away and lengthening my swing. Obviously this is much easier to do off a tee so its perfect for those pesky 200yd par 3s. I would not recommend this approach unless you are a lower handicapper since you don't want to mess up your normal game. You are at 14 so you're close. Hybrid is probably the way to go especially since you are carrying a 3I and the Hybrid won't force you out of a scoring club.

Maybe give this a shot at the range one day though and see how it works. Its good to have options.

I use a 20.5* (3) Hybrid and the lowest iron I use is a 4 iron.  I hit my 4 Iron right around 190 yards and my hybrid goes 215 no problem.  I have the Cleveland Mashie Hybrid M3 and the ball seems to really fly off the club high and long.

Thanks guys...that is really exactly what I was looking for.  I ordered three hybrids today so I can test them out and get and idea if I'm even going to like them and how I hit them....if not I'll order a replacement for my 3 iron and learn to use it properly lol.

Thanks again for all the help

I've gone thru a phase of really wanting to be able to hit long irons rather than hybrids, but now I might be resorting back to going the hybrid route from 190+. My only problem is I tend to have a real difficult time getting solid contact with a hybrid. I hit really thin, adjust for my error, and chunk it next time.

I swing my hybrid more like a driver than an iron.  I think my hybrid is definitely easier to hit though.  I still use my 4 iron but my set did not come with a 3 iron so I got a 3 hybrid instead.

Looks like we hit our irons about the same distance. A 3 hybrid 18° on a full swing will be so long. I think a 4 hybrid 21° would go long also. I say load up on the 4 iron lol, but im new hah. I would tee up just a tiny bit high and hit it 105%.

Sincerely, Jim

I just bought yet another hybrid & don't like it - suggest you get a 7 wood - I hit mine better than any hybrid I've owned & I've owned a lot of them

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
