Everyones pushed it off the tee and had a big branch in the way of the green. What do you do to get that aggressive cut when you need it? Here's some tips that i Think might help. Again I love the debates going on and some even better tips coming out.

1.  setup to the left, we're not trying to get you to pull across the shot for a pull slice.

2.  I like to pull back my left foot about 6 inches, a few wont like this tip but it makes it easier for me to use my hips in the shot.

3.  Offset the face slightly to the right, practice on the range will tell you how much to offset it. Take a normal swing and just focus on not bringing it back inside.

Hope this helps Thanks :)

If I open may stance and open the face, I just get a high weak shot. I have developed what I call a 'trap fade' or some would call it a power fade.

Basically, I aim right (yes right), then pull right across my body like a slicer going over the top. I keep the hands from rotating in the impact area to keep the face open.

This allows me to hit a fade with a closed face. I.e. swing path is 10 degrees left of body line, clubface is 5 degrees left. This means that I can hit a fade with less loft, as a closed face generally has less dynamic loft. This puts more sidespin on the ball (or tilts the spin axis of the ball more to the horizontal - whatever floats ur boat) and hence I can move the ball more.

I used to really struggle with a fade/slice as I was from the inside with my swing. This meant that, as my path was 10 degrees to the right, I would have to have the face at least 11 or more degrees open - but then it had so much loft it wouldn't fade, just go straight right (a clubface push slice).

All you ahve to do to fade it, is get the face more open to the path - but understand that there are ways to do this that will promote more curvature with the same clubs, as changes are generally not made in isolation. again - exploration of differing variables is key

I find that players with more of a beginner ability in the game are more likely to top it if I ask them to pull it across.

yup - was just explaining how i hit a fade.

When I am dealing with a beginner, I will mainly just go through clubface - though depends what i have in front of me as a pupil. If they have played tennis, i will relate it to cutspin

exactly, I use that exact line I love tennis players trying to learn golf. They're always the best beginning pupils.

Face left of target, path farther left. Ball a touch forward, hands a bit back, perhaps.

I usually find when I have my hands back and ball forward - even if I do get the face open to the path the ball is just high and weak. Sometimes having the ball forward in the stance helps me swing more left of my body line, depends what type of fade I am hitting. I usually get the most curvature when my hands are more forward of the ball whilst swinging left - this can help me keep the face open for a start, but mainly take the loft off the club resulting in more curvature with the same face/path combo

I'm talking about at setup, not at impact. The handle is still forward of the ball at impact. Not necessarily as forward as with a draw, but still forward. But it's undeniably true that moving the ball slightly forward (a ball at most) and the handle back (an inch, maybe two) can help hit a cut, just as moving the ball back and putting the handle forward help to hit a draw.

I'm sure if you think about it you can figure it out. :-)

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
