Hi All,

New to the forum and new to golf -just started a 14wk Instructional Golf League, very excited! I have an old set of Tommy Armour 845u, and am looking to upgrade by buying a set off of http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/

I was set on getting the Diablo Edge Irons as they are well rated and reviewed in the Super Forgiveness category by golf.com and golfdigest. The only thing I didn't love was the look of them -but feel that "confidence" aside, the looks probably aren't as important as the rest. The website has now added the Razr X HL irons to the site, and being new they are a couple hundred more -but still a great deal compared to retail. I also like the new look a lot more. So I started looking into other differences between the two.

Callaway no longer makes the Diablo Edge irons, but now pushes the RAZR X HL as the choice for Super Forgiveness. They clubs appear to be identical, club for club, as far as length, weight and lie, and have the same Callaway selling features.

http://www.callawaygolf.com/global/en-us/golf-equipment/classic-golf-equipment/diablo-edge-irons.html

The only glaring difference that I could see, was that the Diablo Edge irons have a low bounce angle, and the RAZR X HL irons have a high bounce angle of more than double in some cases.

Any thoughts on why Callaway's old forgiveness irons (2010/2011 Hotlist) have a low bounce and their new forgiveness irons (2012 Hotlist) have a high bounce? Which is more desirable for a beginner? I couldn't find anything from Callaway that explained the change in design. -And now I'm worried about getting the wrong set for my needs.

SIDENOTE: Anybody else feel bad for Furyk yesterday? That was hard to watch.

Depends on your game.  I've heard the Razr HL are very forgiving and very long.  They will go very high though.  If you have problems with a high ball flight you might want to go with the Diablos.

The bounce should be pretty close on the two sets.  The Razr HL has a wider sole though.  If I were you I'd hit them both.  Some people are bothered by really wide soles.  I would imagine the Razr HL will be more forgiving.  The Diablos should still be forgiving and give you something you can grow into.

Looking forward to it! -And thanks for all the replies. They have a larger inventory of the RAZR on the preowned site now, will have to make my decision soon.

You're gonna love the Razr's. Put my x-14s and Eye 2+s in moth balls for these.

I haven't hit the Razrs, but do have the diablo edge's. They are very forgiving and pretty easy to hit.

You'll probably be fine with either.

OK, clubs came in yesterday. Went to the range and tried out both sets. Both had a great feel to them. I had a hard time distinguishing which I liked better. I lean towards the Razr X HL. The HL's are a little wider, and there is more weight distributed towards the back. Distance and accuracy with both was similar. I will say that I liked the feel of the HL's better, just felt like a cleaner hit.

I am happy that I wet with the HL's. I hit both at the store before ordering them. But like them even more now that they have the shafts I wanted, and length & lie I wanted. Looking forward to the rain going away long enough that I can get a round in with them.

  • 1 year later...

So I do have last years Callaway Razr HL, I made 2 chip ins from 20+ yards back.  They are very nice and do go high.  Yet it does depends on the swing, you can modify your swing to go up more, or forward more.  This only works for irons.  Almost made a chip in today, few cm away.  I recommend the Jaws SW also instead of the regular HL SW.  I have not tried Diablo, yet it would be interesting to mix.

For example, with my HL clubs my yard difference is not the much.  So if Diablos have a lower ball arch, then a mix might be better.

    • No, hitting into a hazard that is supposed to be avoided and is designed to be penalizing is not the same as hitting it into the middle of the fairway.   You are penalized because you hit it into a hazard. Based on your logic let's say you hit it into a red staked penalty area and you could normally play it but it's in temporary casual water from rain. Would you expect a free drop from there too??
    • They could have declared it GUR, sure. It is. It's temporary water, and as I said before, an abnormal course condition (ACC). That's what rule 16 is about — ACCs. No, a bunker ≠ the middle of the fairway. You are penalized because you hit it into a bunker. As for the rest… let's stick to the topic. Yep.
    • It's not dumb. It's dumb to randomly allow a free drop that provides an advantage you don't deserve. And your committee had the option of determining it GUR. Did you talk to them?
    • A sand trap is not supposed to have 3 inches of water in it. To me that’s temporary, casual water. Just like if your ball lands in a deep rain puddle in the middle of the fairway. I would have gladly hit out of any spot in that bunker. I understand that it’s a different rule. I just think it’s a dumb rule. You are penalized because it rained.  Here’s what I think is the dumbest rule in golf, and all sports for that matter - professionals playing for millions of dollars in a tournament have to carry around a little pencil and scorecard to keep their score and sign it, when there are big scoreboards all over the course and on tv. Can you imagine the Knicks losing because they didn’t count their score correctly? Like I said, I love the game, but it’s time to move into the 21st century already.
