have been doing a league about 5-6 yrs. still one of the worse golfers. they have a,b,c flights. i just want to break 60 or 50 for 9.

i have taken lessons, too much to remember. just when i think i have it, i don't. i go out with buddies about once a week, some of them shoot 50's , some 60's for 9. a friend takes lessons, it seems to help sometimes, and not others, another friend doesn't want to pay for lessons seems to have found his groove. it is fun though, just wish i can improve consistently!! i go on line for tips and try to remember a few  that way!!!

Are you a coordinated person?  Do you have issues picking up other sports?

I don't know what to tell you.  I've seen guys who have been playing for years.  Their swings are all over the place.  For some reason golf just doesn't make sense to them.  Maybe go lefty?

I have no stock in this, but check out the book "Your Perfect Swing". There are many ways to swing. If you are getting or reading tips that apply to different swings then you will be all over the place. I did this for years and when I found this book I finally understood what my swing was and what things mattered to me and stopped trying to be like other people and just focused on my swing. Things got better very quickly.

I am a Hands golfer and being older you might be as well. I use my hands and wrists to square the face. If this is you and you are getting tips meant for a Modern swinger then you will be mixing Oil and Water.

Check it out.

Also, are you using the "right" equipment?  Although properly fit equipment is by no means a cure-all, equipment that doesn't match your game can certainly hurt.  I.e. more forgiving clubs & proper shaft flexes, can make a big difference.  And if you're using old clubs (i.e. older than 5-10 years), newer clubs also may also make the results of bad swings a little better (unless it's your putting that's holding you back of course!)

I recently (again) thought my game was in better shape and tried to move up to blades, and voila, worse scores for nearly 6 months.  Went back to more forgiving irons, and again i'm scoring in the 80's...

    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
