I'm staying in Cranberry and am looking for a few places to play some golf. Something in the $50-$60 range, and not Cranberry Highlands (because I know about it already).

Anyone have any ideas? I played a place called "Alcoma" today, and so... yeah, not courses like that, please. I'd call it "quirky" at best.

Any recommendations?

I'm looking for weekday playing partners at Cranberry Highlands or in general Pittsburgh area

Hi George. You should check out the leagues at the courses you're interested in. They have most of the afternoon tee times locked. If you're looking to just walk on during the week. Check out North Park, they'll be glad to hook you up with someone.

Ah Alcoma, it's name was derived from the

AL legheny CO unty MA sons, they built it "back in the day". Think about it, who knows more about golf course design than a bunch of bricklayers?? When I was growing up, it was a country club, I drove by it often wishing I could someday play it. I finally got my chance when a member invited me to play it with him. Like they say, be careful what you wish for... Now it's a public track and the conditions have worsened. I go to an "event" there annually, my team is the defending champs so I guess we have to return in 09. The pool has been paved over, the food sucks and there is no driving range. I can't wait!

I've have'nt played many of the courses around here but Irwin Country Club (just east of the city past Monroeville) is a decent course.

I played Alcoma the Monday of U.S. Open week (Oakmont). And... yeah, I won't be back. Mostly due to the quirkiness of the course itself. There are some odd holes... about 16 of 'em.

You might want to try Stoughton Acres just north of Butler. It's a family-owned course and the owners manage it themselves. They take lots of pride in the place and it shows in the upkeep. They don't allow booze out there which is not necessarily a bad thing; certain elements tend to shy away from it. My brother in law plays there often and raves about it. It's supposed to give your bag a workout.

thanks- I'll check it out- I know the highlands has no leagues from what I'm told- and I know there's another course up there (public) that's inexpensive and supposed to be nice-

Hartmann's Deep Valley Golf- anybody ever play there?

how would we do that?- with every other place I've lived- there is a strong sense of community- though I've yet to find one-maybe we could work together and start something like this.

Deep Valley, in my humble opinion, isnt really that nice of a course. the fairways very narrow and arent in good condition, the greens are postage stamp small, and the layout is terrible. once again, that all my humble opinion.

Strawberry Ridge, however, is my home course and i purchased a season pass there and play up there a lot. its not a very long course (like 6000 yards), but it has a lot of elevation change which makes it play a but longer. its a bit of a pain to walk (elevation change!) but if you're in reasonable shape it isnt that bad. id suggest trying to play a round up there if you can. you'll shoot real low (its not that hard) and boost your confidence. Quicksilver is also VERY nice. i played there last year. its a tough course, a lot harder than Strawberry Ridge. they had US Open Reginal Qualifying there for this years Open. the course is in great condition and is pretty challenging, but you shold definately look into it.

We played there just the other day- the owners are nice so they'd fill you in if you call- are you looking for someone to play with? Rick and I are looking to build a group of guys who could make up a foursome

never did make it down to hartmann's or strawberry ridge this year due to a late season injury. still played some but not as much as i would have liked but yes i'd be interested in getting together with a group of sand trappers next season if there is any interest in that sort of thing.
