This has become my white whale although if I ever started doing it it would probably mess me up.

I hit the ball very solid with a slight draw on most shots. I can get the ball to hit and check up or even skip, check and come back a foot or so but I have never pulled the string on one. I play Pro V1s and my wedges are xFT Taylormades with brand new faces and irons are Taylormade MBs less than a year old.

There are a million videos and tips about this but none seem to do it for me. What is your experience? Can you pull the string? Were you like me and couldn't but then figured it out or could you always do it? I want to hear some real experiences not just pros giving tips.

Thanks in advance

It depends also on the greens you are playing on.

On somem courses, with very firm greens, it just isn't goiung to happen. Bear this in mind when you are watching the British Open in a few weeks. They'll be landing the ball short of the green in many cases.

A person who claims to be able to "pull the string" might go to your course or mine and not be able to make it stop after rolling forwards 10 feet.

In any case, why do you want to do it? So that you can watch shots that land pin high spin back to the front of the green?

If you aren't doing it, aim to land short of the pin so it can roll up.

When you see it on TV, more often than not it doesn't help the player.

If you are good enough to land behind the pin and spin back, you are good enough to land short of the pin and roll up.

For the average player, it usually shows a lack of control of the ball.

Go and replay Kyle Stanley's shot earlier in the year if you think it's  a"cool" shot.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Not sure why you'd want to do this but:

  • Steep angle of attack
  • Clean contact
  • Clubhead speed
  • Good acceleration through the ball

Aside from you equipment/ball and course conditions, those are what you need to back one up.

Learning how to control this shot is important. It is not always possible to hit it short and roll it up. There is a green on my home course that is so sloped from back to front you must hit it past the pin and back it up. Plus it is a cool shot!

You know what I would like to do?  I would like to be able to hit that shot where the ball lands left of the pin and spins to the right or vice-versa.  I could see that as being really usefull.  Unfortunately, I can't even get it to check up, tho :(

Why you'd ever want to back the ball up is beyond me. Ideally you want the ball to stop where it hits.

I readily admit that the only reason I want to do it is because it's freaking awesome!! I actually like what I have now. 1 hop stop or skip check and spin back to where it landed. It does frustrate me though that I can't do it. The ladies on the LPGA can do it. They are all better than me but c'mon man!!!
