Just picked up the GS catalog, and am considering their SR-460 driver (HiBore XL clone) as well as Snake Eyes hybrids and GS D2 irons (X-20 clones). These are all assembled with name brand shafts and are much cheaper cost than their counterparts from Cleveland, Callaway, etc.

My question is: Will a 27 handicapper such as myself notice the diffrerence between Golfsmith and Callaway? I am taking lessons from the Golftec pro in the Golfsmith store, and will soon do a fitting session with him.

Just seeking some opinions on the Golfsmith custom heads and workmanship.

Thanks

I made a custom built driver last year, my dad and I decided what the hell and try a snake eyes head. I got a 410cc snake eyes driver head, 10 degree. The loft was too low for me, but when I caught it (which wasnt consistently) I hit it really well. I got the grafalloy pro launch shaft and a winn grip...I think they are pretty good quality, and I would def. consider making my own driver again.

I used to own a driver from Golfsmith, it was called the Big Gun.. Funny, it now looks like a 5 wood compared to my new 460cc driver... Anyway, it was a very high quality club and it was perfect for me for many years. I also owned "clone" irons, not from Golfsmith but from another manufacturer and they were quite good. I had a friend who was a good golfer and he used to build clubs from Golfsmith and the quality was always quite good...

I've been considering building a driver with the same head as well.

Look at my signature, I'm playing Golfsmith irons that I built earlier this year too. I've found their components to be very high quality and excellent workmanship. Their quality is on par with pretty much any OEM brand. Of course they have products that span a wide range of prices and quality (just like most OEMs) but their higher end components are quite excellent. Here's a few pics of my irons I put together this year... D2 Iron Set: P2 Wedge Set: I don't think my mediocre pictures or the catalog pictures come close to doing them justice. They are really good looking clubs. I played in a tournament last Friday and none of my playing partners could believe how nice they looked having built them myself. The D2 heads are quite forgiving and I went with them plus graphite shafts because I've been having tendonitis problems in my left elbow. The clubs have helped a lot in that regard. Once my elbow troubles go away (it's getting better) I will be building a full set of P2 irons with steel shafts as they are cavity back "player's clubs" and that's a lot closer to the forged blades and steel shafts I've played almost all my life. As long as they are assembled well with good shafts and grips then the Golfsmith clubs will stand up in quality and performance with the best of them!

I tried a lot of hybrids and chose a 19* snake eye model, the cost was not a factor, I just hit the snake eye model the best.

    • I've been putting whilst looking at the hole and it's definitely helped my distance control
    • I wonder if that is why my home course basically have no stakes now.  Not even markers.  It’s completely up to golfers to remember what is OB and hazard and how things used to be marked.     Even in tournaments, there is no marking and certain areas are played differently by different golfers who either don’t know better or use it to their advantage funny reading thru this with courses that actually have markers
    • is it though?????? "Millions of fans"?????
    • Great post, thanks for the informaiton. I try to avoid adding salt to anything I eat. I tend to add pepper on to my meals as opposed to salt. And I am trying to eat as clean on possible. On golf day, I eat 3 eggs for breakfast (pepper NO salt) and a salad for lunch, with grilled chicken thigs (pepper, garlic, no salt). I have been trying to avoid processed food, but we all slip. I also should have mentioned that the electrolyte packet calls for mixing with 16 oz of water, however I mix in 32 oz of water, so I dilute the electrolyte powder.
    • So if I read the news correctly, the PIF will not fund LIV after this season.  LIV is trying to find new funding and a number of players there are now asking about getting back to the Tour.    I am very, very concerned that Taylor Gooch will not have a place where he can make a jackass out of himself soon
