I tried shaping the ball last year on the range just for fun but never wanted to try it on the course. This year I feel like adding it to help my range. Play alot of courses in the Edmonton area that require different shots. Last course I played theres a monster 550+ par 5 with about 250yds of water down the right side and then starts uphill on the last 250yds. The last 2 times I played that hole I've dunked it in the water. I don't want to play conservative because its such a long and uphill hole. I tend to fade the ball and its a narrow fairway so there in lies my problem. I'm playing that course again sunday. I want to attempt a draw off the tee next time.

Managed to draw my irons today with relative ease. Closed my stance, slightly closed the face of the club and swung through. Practiced slight draws and heavy draws. Seemed to work well. Tried the same thing with the driver and could only hit it straight. I think its because the driver is longer and harder to manipulate.

I need the fundamentals for an easy way to draw the ball with driver.

Thanks

Well fundamental and easy are two kinda different things ^^. Ill tell you an easy one I used to do, pull your left foot back and make sure your shoulders follow the same line that your feet do. Keep the club face where you want the ball to start and swing away.

Left foot back?? Wouldn't that set me up for a fade. I had my left foot forward in a closed stance for the irons and that draws the ball. I do hit right handed.

I dont know why you'd be trying to work the ball if your a 30 handicap. Most 30 handicaps are just picking up the game and are lucky enough to get the ball in the air?

haha your right I was thinking you were a lefty, it is your right foot for righties. Another good one is to do more of a rounded swing. Imagine baseball again.

EDIT: There is nothing wrong with a 30 handicapper wanting to learn more about the game, but yes you should be more concerned with contact and distance control. If you can hit the ball deadly straight you never really need to work the ball.

My thoughts exactly. Most 30 handicaps don't have a draw shot in their bag. I'm half the handicap you are and cannot draw the ball at will with my irons like you can.

Well the thing about draws is promoting an in to out swing (the rounded swing) but the problem is that people have used the wrong grip. You should implement a strong grip where you see more knuckles on your left hand, don't be afraid to finish the shot. Anyone can hit a draw/fade with practice since the fade is the exact opposite. It doesn't matter what your handicap is but it certainly helps to have a good understanding of your own golf swing before trying it.

Can't post anything without someone questioning

. I didn't ask anyone if I should worry about working on my weaknesses did I. If you really need to know I am a solid 300+ with the driver and solid with my long-mid irons. I lose strokes around chipping and putting. If I need your input about that I'll ask otherwise what keeps you at a 19 index??? All I want is an added skill for my solid long game on a specific difficult par 5. So keep it in context.

To draw the ball you roll your wrist through the strike. Finishing with a closed club faced. I would die without my draw!

Thanks everyone who has given their good knowledge so far.

I just went out and bought some foam practice balls so I can try it in the backyard. Golfing Friday, and Sunday so I'll definitely give it a whirl there.

I'm sure your just an amazing driver and great iron player. I'll get butch harmon to work on your chipping and putting, and next week we'll sign the contract.

lol!

Seriously though, if you really are 300 yards on the driver and you hit a fade or slice you might benefit from slowing your swing down, you may be overswinging. Also, the sensation of "rolling your wrists" is fundamental to hitting a fade IMO.

Get right on that

Coming from someone that uses a 13.5 degree driver I can see why you would never see 300yds.

I'm sure you mean draw right? I don't have a problem hitting the fade. I've always thought you really need to power the draw anyway and not slow things down.

And why is it so hard for ppl to believe a 30 or so hndcp can't hit 300yds. Todays equipment makes it pretty easy. I played with a Great Big Bertha for years and got 290 out of that.

I tend to fade or slice when I overswing. I would recomend trying to play around with swing speed and practice a inside out swing pattern.

When I am trying to fade I will kinda pull the club in on the back swing and then release on the downswing, this almost always results in a draw. Anyway where your game is now I would worry more about short game, short game saves strokes. I am not a big hitter type and usually only carry 240 yards or less. My short game is what makes my game, accuracy is much better than distance. I learned this last year and took alot off my driver swing and it has improved my game alot. I used to have a horrible slice and really worked on smoothing my swing out.

Actually a lot of the pros are hitting higher lofted clubs now. They are hitting them 300+. I think Phil is hitting a 11.5 degree lofted driver.

I totally agree about working on my short game. I always do. I started this thread to ask about draws and only draws. If I wanted to be told about short game I would start that thread. Draws can help someone score better just as much as any other part of the game.

Short game is for old men! Keep rocking the ball brother!
