So my dad is a 33.3

I'm a 15.1

I play from the blues, he plays from the whites.

Whites are 69.6/131

Blues are 71.3/137

How much do I need to whoop his ass by?

You come in at 18 strokes, with your dad at 39 strokes.  22 would be the "whoop" number.

oh lord.

Well at least this course sets up nicely for my fade and disastrous for his draw... water on the left for the majority of holes.

Actually, this is not quite right.  You also need to take into consideration the tee ratings.  You take the difference in course ratings, round to the nearest whole number, (.5 and up going to the next higher number) and then either add that number to the player's handicap playing from the harder rated tees, or subtracting that number from the player playing the easier tees.

The difference in tees 71.3 - 69.6 is 1.7 which is rounded up to 2.0

You can either give yourself 2 more strokes, or take 2 away from your Dad.  Either way, you'll have to give him 19 strokes.

John

Yeah, this is what you do when you play from different tees. You'll note in post #2 that the course rating doesn't apply - just the slope. You do this to account for the difference in course rating from these tees as well.

Beating your dad is the best! I beat my dad by 1 shot in a 2 day stroke play tournament last weekend, it was great and I can give him no end of shit!

Thanks for the additional information about how to account for handicap of different tees, I was unaware.

Mattplusness, sorry for the inaccurate post.  At least with a tie, it gives you both a great reason to get back to course soon!

Play against yourself...golf shouldn't be a competition between people unless you're playing for prizes/money.  I don't care what the others shoot on the course and compliment them on good chips, putts and drives.

I'd argue the opposite. Golf is ultimately ALL about competition between people and has been since the beginning. Whether played for money or just bragging rights. The whole handicap system is in place for just that reason...... I can appreciate and celebrate someone else's good shots while still trying to beat the pants off of them!

Maybe if I was better I'd think that way, but right now improvement is my main focus.  I guess the most important thing is still give credit for others' good shots.  I have a friend who lives to celebrate when I miss an easy putt or slice a drive...

You need a better class of friends! My buddy, who plays off 3.5 and I play with another good friend (Tony) currently playing off 23. Two years ago he was 35. Handicaps keep it fair and we all want to win, but believe me, we celebrate every milestone and good shot that Tony makes. He's under 100 pretty consistently now and nobody wants to see him break 90 for the first time more than the 2 of us better players! Did I mention that we still want to kick each other's ass though?! ;-)

Exactly how it should be!

I celebrate every good shot and give advice whenever it's asked. But I will always drive it home if I birdie a hole and he pars it. But if I birdie and he's +4 for the hole? I'll try to bring him back. It brings me down playing with someone who is down in their own spirits.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
