Just how overhyped are grips?

Funny update:

I showed the pro shop my clubs, and he said they were fine.

Not perfect, but not worth replacing.

He said to just wash with soap.

Then, I told him the grips are 15 years old.

He said "Really?"

He took another look and stuck to his guns.

He said they're fine.

Another guy verified.

I did replace the cracking grip on my putter for $9.

I might regrip my clubs just for the hell of it.

I have tried many different things for cleaning grips and I find Windolene the best, I think they call it windex in the USA

I am using original 1963 Hogan grips. I took them off, extended the shaft and reinstalled. they are just fine. New grip I like Tacki Mac Jumb But any grip will do as long as the are the right size.

2 days ago I put a .590 on a .600 shaft and stretched it thinner = disaster. the size was all wrong. The grip was great feel etc but all wrong. Size is critical.  Cheap grips are just fine. You can even get a whole set of rummage sale clubs that really were never used. I inject paint thinner with a diabetic needle from the drug store and pull them off. Yes I tell the druggest what I am using them for as they always ask thinking drug abuse.

While at the drug store I buy rubber cementnt for a couple bucks. I pour some in the grip (not much) wipe some on the shaft that has been masking taped and slide it on. I wipe off the excess as it comes out the hole in the grip and put  it back in the jar. The dried stuff that makes a mess wipes right off later.  I never use grip tape and have changed hundreds of grips with no failures. Heck you drive a car at 80 miles an hour that had a tire repaired with a  rubber cemented patch so a golf club is no big deal. I just inject thinner again and change layers of tape etc. If there is any fault in my methods is that it is so darn easy that I over do the experimentation.

Part of the higher cost of newer "unusual" grips is production economics: A grip model which only sells 100,000 units a year will have higher per-grip set-up costs (pre-production) than a model which sells 1,500,000 units a year.

Grips from 1963 !  That's awesome.  Mine are just starting!

I washed my grips today.   All I did was put some soap lather on the grip and immed. wipe it off.

Let's see if it does anything.  I am going to try to "hold a baby bird" next time I play.

I do remember clubs that had only a red colored cement as standard before double sided tape came into existence.

Yes.  I am that old.

Lamkin Crosslines are great and should cost you about $7.00 per grip installed at a local golf store.
