Whats up everyone, i've never been a player thats had much luck with greenside flop shots but with retraining for tournament play I feel that it's a shot I need in my bag as from time to time a pitch or a bump and run really just didn't cut it.

I'm lookning for some drills to help me out with this shot (15-35ish yards out) and was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on drills that have worked for you in this aspect

Just to clarify, you already know how to do a flop shot and you just want to know some drills? OR You want to learn how to hit a flop shot + drills?

I TECHICALLY know how but really struggle to execute the shot. One shot will be great then ill get under the next one and hit it 10 yard on a 30 yard shot then ill step up and blade the next one the put another right on the pin and so on. Im ultimately wanting drills to increase my consistancy with the shot as i LOVE the benefits of the soft almost vertical landing on fast greens.

I will going to the range today. I will either make a video somehow or try to take pictures on my set up. (feet, weight distribution, grip, club setup, etc.) I will post them as soon as I can. I'm pretty consistent with flip shots.

Unfortunately I won't be able to take the pictures. Tomorrow should be fine though.

Sounds like a technical issue.

So many ways to hit a flop.

Seve Elkington had a simple way. He would set up slightly closer to the ball, narrow stance, almost lift up the heel of the clubhead, favor the front side, and show bounce at contact, i.e. the sole hits the ground instead of the leading edge hitting first. High finish. This is fairly simple.

Mickelson does a hinge and hold - sets up open with leading edge pointing to target, weight favors left side the entire time with very narrow stance, lots of wrist hinge and show bounce at contact, but club head does not pass left hand, just straighten right arm.

I use a narrow stance favoring the left side the entire time, if I want it high, I will use a lot of wrist hinge, slide, expose the bounce, and raise the handle high on the follow through, while doing the hold on the hinge and hold. Straighten your legs as you're making contact, and that should get rid of the fats or misses.

Also, it helps to keep your eyes on the ball as you're making contact - I find inconsistency results if the head goes up before contact.

Good luck out there.

I don't have the link, but if you're talking about green side shots where you don't have any obstacles that require a really extreme flop shot, I've found a lot of success recently with the high pitch shot in Mike's (mvmac) pitching video.  I'm not 100% sure this is exactly as he describes it in that video, but what I've been doing is ball well forward, weight a bit forward with the chest a bit up, start with the face a bit open but flat (ie, not way open with heel down, toe up like if you want to hit a flop from a fluffier lie with no fade spin), stance a tad open, then hit it sort of like a bunker shot, with the butter fly grip and very wristy.  The idea for me is float the club under the ball, using the bounce and with the ball forward encouraging the hands to be closer to even with the face at impact rather than ahead like a normal wedge shot.  I've had good success hitting high little pitches with minimal roll out with this method from lies that were tight enough that I wouldn't want to risk a more extreme flop shot.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
