My wife got a new job and we've decided to blow some of her first paycheck.  This means I'm going to get fit for some new clubs.

Right now, I have a Diablo driver that I bought online a few years back because it came with a free 3H.  The Driver has a stiff shaft and the 3H regular (i was limited by their stock).  I have had on and off success with the driver, months where I could hit it 270 and straight consistently, months were I can't keep it in play.  Right now I can't hit it and haven't used it off the range in months.

I also have a 3 Wood which I've been hitting well, but I think getting fit with a new one could benefit me.  I hit it about 235 and can hit a relatively consistent fade with it, but I think I hit it too high and lose a lot of distance.  Its an old Burner (07 maybe) with a regular shaft.  I hit my 4 iron 220 off the tee, and I would hope to get a bigger spread.

I bought Burner Irons in Jan 2011 and got fitted sort of half-assed at golf galaxy.  That's the only "fitting" I've ever had.   I took a lesson at golftec once and the guy commented that he thought my stiff shaft on the driver wasn't stiff enough.  So I'm fairly sure I'm going to need at least stiff on the 3W.

I have to buy a new SW because I dont have one.  I don't necessarily have to have the latest and the greatest, just something that I can hit consistently.  I am intrigued by adjustability though.  If I can afford both a driver and a 3W, i'd like to get both.  If not, I'll probably get a driver.

I do have a few questions about how fittings work and the associated costs.  Say I luck out and hit the Razr Fit best of all (still on sale for $273!).  When looking at shafts, there is probably a stock shaft that generally fits my flex, and that wouldn't cost more, right?  But then if the guy tells me that some other shaft fits me better than the stock options, I've got to pay for the shaft in addition to the club right?  And this could cost me another $100 or something?

Also, I think I'm going to get fit at a place using flightscope x2 indoors. My other option would be a local driving range that lets you hit outside and uses a Vector Launch Monitor.  Any thoughts on which is preferable?

I may also have him look at my existing putter and irons and see if they could be fit better to me.  I'd be interested to know if different iron shafts could benefit me, as a possible purchase sometime down the road.

It's too bad you "have" to buy all these clubs. Fittings are usually free, BTW.

At places other than big box stores?  These are the two places I was considering: One Two

My impression is that I can get fit at a big box for free with a purchase, but have to rely on the crappy monitors they use that tell me I hit the ball 389 yards and straight.  Do "clubfitters" usually provide free fitting with purchases too?

I don't know about all of them.  I am in a similar situation to you and am splurging on a club fitting, and the place I am going charges.

I find that some will knock off some of the cost pf clubfitting if you buy clubs there.  You are right about the big box stores.  Either one of your other choices will work well. Ask about discount on clubfitting if you buy from them.  The worst they can say is no.

I ended up with a 10.5* R11s with the stock stiff shaft.  I hit the RBZ further, but my misses were worse and it felt a little too light to me.  I liked the Razor Fit, but it came down to the R11s and the K15.  I hit the K15 a bit further but the R11s dispersion was better.

The pro I went to made 2 easy adjustments to my swing, and between that and the new clubs I went from 240 yard banana balls to 270 yards and straight.  Can't wait to give it a go tomorrow.

I also picked up a G20 3 wood with the stock stiff shaft.  I like the low profile that's similar to my old burner and easier to hit off the deck.  I liked the RBZ off the tee but not off the deck.  Also tried the super fast, which I liked, the 910F and Razor fit, but I wasn't quite as consistent with them.

And the Vokey SM4 54.14 that I've been missing.

What a day!
