I came to chime in here....

I typically game 1 of these 3 drivers....

9.5 905R Whiteboard 73X 45"

9.5 983K Aldila NV 65S 45"

9.5 983K DG X100 43.5"

I have the most control with the X100, and I don't suffer a ton of distance loss.  I suffered initially because I didn't give myself enough time to get used to the club, and was jumping between the 3 drivers almost every round, leading to a lot of frustration.  After gaming it consistently, I found myself keeping more balls in play.

I seem to get the most distance out of the club by trying to play a power draw.

For me, it was a cheap experiment.  $16 for the 983K, and $20 for a DG X100 + installation (had a coupon).  You can probably build a better club with a heavy graphite shaft, but no way you're paying $36 for it.

I love it!

I had a 983E with the speeder; when the head snapped off in airline baggage, I replaced it with a steel shaft.  It was super heavy compared to the speeder, but I hit it pretty straight.  Not far, but straight.  Played it that way for 2 or 3 years.

Then I upgraded to a 910D3 with the ahina X-stiff, butt trimmed 1 inch (44").  Still straight, but long has entered the equation.  Very long when I hit it good; adequately long when I miss it a bit.  I can still hit a 90-yard block from time to time, but no shaft is going to cure that.

My advice, based on my experience:  extra stiff and trimmed a bit, but still light and with today's larger, forgiving heads is the best of both worlds.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
