I have a putting practice routine that I do a couple times each week.  It looks like this...

40 push putts, ranging from 1' to 5' - starting with the putter touching the ball, using no back swing

40 right-handed putts, ranging from 1' to 5' - with my left hand behind my back, and normal back swing

40 normal putts, ranging from 1' to 5' - with normal back swing and normal two-handed grip

40 lag putts to various points on the fringe, ranging from 6' to 30', with normal back swing and normal two-handed grip

I would expect that I would putt poorly with no back swing, but understand that this is helping to groove my stroke.  I would expect to putt a little better right-handed, since I am taking a back swing.  And I would expect to putt a lot better with both hands on the putter.

But if I tally my last 1,500 practice putts, it looks like my right-handed ones are as good or better than they are with both hands...

Push-putts: 74% accuracy

Right-handed putts: 82% accuracy

Both-handed putts: 81% accuracy

Has anyone noticed a similar pattern in their practice?  And what in the world might this mean?

In putting under pressure, the right hand for righties usually fouls things up.

That's why we have left hand low, the saw, etc. I go with Pat O'Brien's grip (Zach Johnson's short game and putting guru) which keeps most of the right hand off the grip and tries to level out the shoulders.

The back hand goes insane under pressure.

But .... that's only my opinion.

Using one hand it is very easy to keep the shoulders and, thus, head still and simply swing the putter. Not sure if this is allowing you to be better but it's something to consider.

You've just discovered the beauty of, and what many people do not understand about, the long putter.

If you were trying to propel a golf ball into or as close to a hole in the ground as possible, without a putter in your hand, you would toss it with an underhand motion with either the right or left hand, but not both.

This is essentially what you do with the best long putter strokes.

I don't include the end of the putter being stuck into your belly, and holding it with both hands, as one of the "best" ways to use a long putter.

But try to keep this as a secret, just between you and me, and don't tell any of the guys I play against.
