With all of the Ryder Cup talk last week and many people wondering why Hunter Mahan was excluded from the team, it now seems that Love may have made the right choice after all.  Now that Mahan's bid for the Ryder Cup Team is official, he has come out and said that he is ready for the break:

Quote:
Glad to have a break. It was hard. Harder than I thought,” said Mahan, whose 80-77 weekend left him last of 70 players, at 12-over 300. “(There’s) so much off-the-course stuff, so much going on, golf is hard right now.”
You can only try so hard for so long,” he said. “I’m out of gas.”

So while many people were wondering why Hunter wasn't chosen to be on the team, maybe Davis could see something going on with Mahan that the public just couldn't catch a glimpse of.  I have always wondered how long these guys could play under this much pressure before just "running out of gas" as Hunter put it.  In my opinion, this just goes to show how mentally tough these guys are...especially someone like Tiger who has worked through so much off course stuff along with his golf career.  I couldn't imagine having that kind of mental fortitude.

What do you think...could you handle it?

I've been out of gas since I took up this game...

I think the disappointment of not making the team also took him out emotionally. He wanted to make the team, and not doing so was the final blow to a long, tough season where he started out brilliantly, then slowly fizzled out.

Hunter needs to better condition his mind and body if he's going to be a top player.  He might also need to review his schedule for 2013 and add in some additional breaks to ensure he's got something left for the playoffs.

He is a top player, just not THE top player. He's in the Tour Championship and could win it all with a win there. He also doesn't have to play in the Ryder Cup and be reminded of his flubbed chip in 2010 for 6 days. Win win.

Boo hoo... Golf is hard.  This is their job.

If all I did was travel from golf tournament to tournament in private jets (yes I saw the thread where he took a train... OMG).  And then had the support staff that they have... The elite professionals in golf today have strength trainers, nutritionist, sports therapist, golf swing instructors, mental coaches - and fitters that ensure their clubs are perfectly fit for their round... If I had a 'team' of peeps working with me to ensure I was 'fresh' for Thursday to Sunday's tournament, I think I could handle the long golf schedule.

It's not like these guys are staying in a Motel 6, and eating at Denny's either when they travel.  Where do I sign up?

So Hunter Mahan finished 70th in the BMW among 70 players.  How sad for him.  He said after the selections and before the tournament that he felt like there wasn't much to play for since he didn't make the Ryder Cup team.  How about personal satisfaction?  How about trying to prove a point to Davis Love for not selecting him?  How about the most venal reason, the money?  He didn't deserve to be on the team, with his performance since he won the Shell Houston Open being that of your average middle-of-the-road pro.  Time to suck it up and stop pouting and get back to playing well, Hunter.

Well, first, you've got to pass the talent test, less you be labeled forever as LOFT.

One hears this every year, but you can be physically gifted and in shape - but golf wears mentally. And the only cure for mental fatigue is time off.

The truth ... and it hurts ... us all.

If I didn't live in Canada where I just start getting it together just in time to shut 'er down, I'd be playing scratch golf no problem. I'd never need to take a lesson or practice, that's for sure. What?!?

Who was the player - Chris Riley? - who played a morning match in the Ryder Cup & asked to be taken off the afternoon matches cuz he needed to rest?

Not saying Mahan would be like that, but if he did mention it to DL3 that he's 'out of gas' then great. Don't need players running on fumes at the RC.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
