Does anyone like to play shots like this? Tiger Woods does it all the time with a low iron (2 or 3 iron) or with his woods, he plays a really low ball flight, and throws it off the back foot and hits down on it.

I love doing this for my 3 wood and 5 wood, especially if there's wind in my face and it's been dry for days. If I'm like 210 out, I take out my 5 wood, throw off my middle-to-back of my stance, and hit down on it almost like a 4 iron, and the ball stays really low but it's pounded...

I find it really fun playing this shot, anyone else like doing this?

It's a great shot, no doubt, if you call pull it off. I actually find myself doing this more and more, moving the ball further back in my stance and hitting the ball a little lower, even with shorter irons 7i - PW...not sure if that qualifies as a stinger but it's very reliable, especially when windy as you mentioned.

He doesn't play it off his back foot, and he doesn't hit down on it. If he did, he'd spin the cover off the ball and it'd just balloon like crazy.

He plays it a little back of normal (but rarely back of center) and he sweeps through the ball on a very level line. He leads with the grip (his hands) to de-loft quite a bit, but that's hardly the same as what you've said.

I have an absolute love-hate relationship with my fairway woods. The times I keep the ball slightly ahead of the middle of my stance and when i dont try to knock the cover off the ball, i hit them pretty good. When I try to do things like punching it, hitting down etc, my swing tempo goes awry and the result is..well..not nice to see. Also, my score becomes a disaster when i pull out my fairway woods for anything other than the short grass.

Yeah, I used to be AWFUL with my fairway woods. Then I just dedicated a large bucket of balls at the range to them, and I love them now. I just fool around on the range trying different things. I find when I hit down on them more, they slice a lot...So I'm starting to sweep them a bit more. For some reason I can't hit them we'll off the tee at all, it sucks cuz I wish I had a "go-to" club.

I wish I had a "go-to" club.

I have been hitting my driver extremely straight lately and it's very pleasant to have the longest club in the bag also the straightest in the bag.

Exactly

Wrist hinge will play a role as well... lots of wrist hinge means high ball flight.

Off the tee, it's the only thing I use. I can't remember the last time I tee'd it up on a par 4 or par 5 with anything but the driver.

i play this shot with my 3 wood cause i temorarily retired my driver until i figure what i'm doing wrong with it. with my driver i would hit like 6-7/14 fairways about 260-280 now with my 3-wood i'm hitting like 10-11/14 at around 230-240. this is much better for my game until i fix my driver. i am not one of those people that think it doesn't matter where you hit it as long as its long. i'd rather hit fairways and it has helped my score even if now i'm hitting a 4iron into a green i'm used to hitting a 7iron.
