Since a success thread was put together, I thought it was only appropriate to have balance here and open a thread on those of you having trouble or who had dropped the concept. Please tell us your story.

I'll tell you the story of a student of mine we'll call Bill.

Bill came to me asking for more distance. He remarked that he had been working on the S&T method for the last month after reading the article.

Now I note that the article aparently has a lot of controversy around it. Some people say it doesn't at all represent the Plummer & Bennett concept. That's a bit suspect. Why would you put your name on it if it's not your concept? But even if the editor got ahold of the article and re-wrote it, wouldn't you put something else out there that sets the record straight? I haven't seen any press release or such?

Anyway getting back to Bill.

Bill is obviously staying on his left leg through the whole swing. His hips go back but his head actually moves forward when he takes the club back. His right hip goes back away from the ball and his leg straightens.

On the way back to the ball, Bill does a reversal. Head goes back, hips go forward but it's more of a slide.

He hits a nice little draw with his 5 iron that goes about 160 yards.

I say to him, "Let me guess, you used to fight a slice, you like this draw, and you've gained about 15 yards with the S&T....but; your back is starting to hurt isn't it?"

He says "Yes I've fought a slice all my life and I have picked up about 10 yards, but it's not my back, it's my left hip that hurts."

"Did you have hip problems before you took up the S&T?"
"No, but I did have back problems."

I changed his setup to have more axis tilt, fixed his grip, and told him to finish tall on his front leg.

He kept his draw, gained 5 more yards, and lost both his back and hip pain.

I got a call from him yesterday where he broke 90 for the first time and hit his longest drive of his life at 295.

Moral of the story, can the S&T help you hit it better? Sure...but that doesn't mean it's the right way.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

Uhhhh, okay. I don't think there is one "right" way.

I never said there was.

So he doesn't S&T at all now?

Where do you have him now putting his weight at address and backswing? Centered? Still on front leg, just not as much?

Perhaps it was just a quick fix

Slightly on his back foot. About 60 40. This happens because of the tilt mostly and not so much a concious effort to change weight.

If you mean it was quick to fix yes...if you mean it was just something designed to fix him for a day, no.

Gotcha. Thanks.

What did you do to his grip, make it stronger? (this is my subtle, yet shameful attempt to suck info out of a teaching pro)

Lol.. it's ok. I don't mind answering questions at all.

I only made one small change to his left thumb position. His grip was fairly neutral but his left thumb was on top of the shaft. I moved it to the side and now he has more support of the club in his swing. (I did NOT strenghthen the grip, just moved the thumb)

Is it an S&T thing to not have your left thumb (righty golfer) on top of the grip or is that a standard grip? Which side of the grip did you move it to?

Naw, I moved his left thumb over to the side of the shaft because for leverage purposes it's necessary. Nothing to do with S&T.;

I explain it here.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htZmOIZWjzU
