This is strange... I am new to golf and am getting slightly better, I found my fairway shots to be the worst of the lot? What is this. I think I hit maybe 2 decent mid iron shots all day. I kept topping them. Is it because I still fet I had a lot to do to get near the green? I'm not sure. At the range I'm fine of the deck, on the course, rubbish!? Any tips?

I used to have a similar problem.  There was 2 reasons I would have problems with fairway shots.  First, I would lift my head up to watch this glorious approach shot that I was in the process of hitting and I didn't want to miss seeing it go straight into the cup.  The other issue I had was not staying down on the ball, with head and shoulders.  I was always good hitting out of the rough because the ball was sort of teed up because the grass underneath it.  I cured both by keeping my head down, staying down on the ball, and by moving the ball a little back in my stance.  I am not an expert by any sense when it comes to teaching others, but this sure has worked for me.  Good Luck.

I'll be sure to give this a go. Thanks. It's very frustrating when you hit a lovely tee shot then take maybe 2 or 3 slashes/tops down the fairway, hit a reasonable chip and then a nice putt. You think to yourself there's three shots I could have removed from my round straight away (those being the awful fairway shots)!!? But this, I suppose, is 'par for the course'. Excuse the horrendous pun there.

slow it down, take half swings until you hit the ball consistently.    No fun to take a full swing and top it every time.    Build up your swing speed once you are making good contact...

You are probably transferring your weight all over the place.  Maybe try and hit some shots with your feet close together.  You have to stay balanced/centered when you do this.  Then slowly spread your feet slightly farther and farther apart until you are at your regular stance.  Make sure you maintain that centered rotation.

All the tips are great from everyone, here is one my son pointed out one day. I am by no means a pro or a teacher but it helped.

And after many years of killing squirrels, I use it all the time.

On your practice swing make sure you take a divot. I say this because many times your practice swing brushes the top of the grass for what ever reason mental, trying to move your game to fast I really don't know. I will not go to hit the ball until i get that divot. You may start digging a trench and hitting it short at first but you will adjust and the ball will start getting in the air.

+1.  Keep the club on plane, rotate (don't sway back, it'll kill you every time), get your weight going forward.

    • Day 50 - 2024-11-19 Hit about 20 balls focusing mostly on the backswing. That's going to be my November and December.
    • They need to do something to speed  up play. They could randomly  time  players. One  idea would  be  if a group gets  out  of  position they are disqualified. If its a group of  3 and  its  1 player playing like  molasses i can imagine an exciting interaction, lol
    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
