When to get new irons?

Just asking in general, but now that I am improving I was thinking that getting new irons might help me improve more. Plus there is another demo day coming for Taylormade. We had a Callaway demo day a week ago and I didn't hit anything out of fear of liking something and then buying it w/o permission if you catch my drift. A couple of guys bought some of the xhot clubs from the demo day and they love them. They are hitting shots longer and more accurate than with their pings or callaways.

doesn't matter how good the club is, if you aren't striking the ball well you won't see the benefits of a better club.

i'll also say that of all the better clubs out there most of their distances are pretty much the same within reason.

I am striking the ball well with my SGI irons. But since they are so forgiving and easy to hit, I imagine I am mishitting them and don't know it.

The categories are also very arbitrary too.  It's easy to tell what category blades fit into, and what category giant Big Berthas fit into, but in the middle it's all grey areas.  I may be wrong, but I think my i20's are considered "better player irons."  If so, that is the exact same category as my old DCIs, however, the forgiveness between the two is night and day.  If I misshit the old ones 1/2" towards the toe, it hurt like I just got sawed off by an inside fastball and didn't go more than halfway to my target.  If I do the same thing with the Pings, I lose 5 or 10 yards of distance, and it feels fine.

A lot of people like "feedback" but I am not one of those.  I'd much rather take the extra help that forgiveness gives me along with lower scores.  (I already know I suck, I don't need pain in my fingers and a higher score to remind me :))

Also, I think you answered your OP question here ... "since they are so forgiving and easy to hit" sounds to me like you are happy with what you have, so no need to change anything yet.

To me this is true. I played the ping G15 for a year and the handicap got down from 36 to 24. But I did'nt feel confident with the irons. This went on and got worse. So I went to a fitter, who fitted me Snake Eyes 675 and light stiff shaft. I was happy again.

Then I went to Florida for a three weeks break. I have a SGI-set there, but could not hit them anymore. No feel, ugly looks. So I bought a second hand set at Golfsmith, the 2010 MacGregor VIP's. They are considered players irons, and I was delighted by the buttery feeling when hitting the sweetspot. It was heaven compared to the SGI's.

And a mishit? It feels like punishment, but the ball will still go (if its not a complete mis). It is helping me getting better. Last year form 16.9 to 13.4. This year the goal is 11.1 and knocking at the door to become single digit.
