I've heard that golf balls go "bad" when kept in cold conditions for extended amounts of time, mostly because of loss of elasticity I believe. Does anyone know how long exactly it takes? I've got some golf balls in my bag which has been sitting in a cold (sub 40*) basement for the majority of the winter. Thanks

In the Bag 2013:

Driver:  FT-9 Draw i-Mix 10.5*

3 Wood:  R11s 15.5*

3 Hybrid:  Idea Tech V3 19*

Irons (4-PW):  ZB Forged

Wedges:  Tom Watson PVD; 52.07*, 56.13*, 60.07*

Putter:  White Ice #1 33"

I play with golf balls that have been sitting in the woods all winter (and maybe another winter or two). Ha ha!

They do go bad with age and environment and are more likely to crack.

Last week on the first tee box my son hit his drive and since it was right down the middle he didn't even watch it, but I did and noticed that the ball flight just didn't look quite right so I asked him if he hit it good. He looked a little surprised and said yes.

As we got up to his ball in the fairway it was back about 120 yards from where his drives typically go. I told him he better check that ball so he did and there was a crack only about 1/4 inch long but spit apart more than most of the hairline cracks I usually see on golf balls.

I put the ball in my pocket intending to throw it in with my practice balls at home but when I got home I just hit it down into the yard with a pitching wedge at my target 120 yards away. It didn't even get much more than halfway there, and I felt like I hit it OK. Must have been more damage than just what was visible on the cover.

Depending on how serious you are about the game you are in, just the thought that they might not be good could cost you, but if it were me I would use them. I buy and find used balls anyway and no telling where they've been or how long they've been there. I would cough up the money for a new sleeve if I was playing in a tournament though (just to be sure).

Ok, that's a good point. I'm sure a couple months in a bag didn't hurt them, I guess it was just a mental thing with me obsessing about the upcoming golf season. Looking forward to it, just trying to get every little thing correct.

    • Day 107 - More pitching practice, playing around with trajectory.
    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
