Something I struggle with on and off is controlling my swing arc between different clubs. My old coaching pro told me that I should have an identical swing throughout the range of my clubs, but I think that is impossible. I tend to swing my wedges and driver with at least a slight variance.

This syndrom is especially true when I made subtle adjustments to my swing arc, grip equipment etc. How much is acceptable variance? Do you guys also feel that your swing varies from clubs?

Thanks, any input appreciated.

Your swing has no choice but to vary from club to club. The golfing gods decided each club would have a different lie, length, loft and purpose (in general). Because of all those factors, your swing will vary for each.

At the vary base of all of that are two things, 1- control/result, and 2- plane.

A wedge, by design, is more upright and more wristy than a driver (which is why the whole one plane/ two plane thing is bunk)

A driver, is flatter and engages more forearm rotation.

Go out on the course and make the same exact swing with a driver and a wedge and I promise one of them will be really bad.

Next, a 75 yard SW shot is a bit different mentally and physically than a drive with a 260 yard carry over water.

With teh driver, we consider distance with direction, with a wedge we consider direction with distance. But we have a much larger miss available to us with a driver, both in terms of the club face size, and where we want the ball to end up.

The key with all of that is not to look like a different golfer... Allow the swing changes to be natural and intuitive without being forced.

Grip is the same period... if your grip changes substantially between a straight away basic wedge shot, and a straight away basic drive... you are doing one of them incorrectly.

As far as stance and posture, again they are determined by the club, a driver will be more upright, feet a bit wider... wedge, more bent over, feet closer together.

Go on youtube and look up some different swings... and you can pick up some key differences right away, but in general... dont think to much, the differences are natural not contrived.

To the OP, yes, your swing varies. Ball position changes. The distance you are from the ball (and the shaft length) changes. Those two things alone necessitate a change in both plane, angle of attack, etc.

As far as the rhythm of the swing, Annika Sorenstam likes to say that she feels that her swing speed (not clubhead speed) and rhythm is the same for all of her clubs.

Re: Annika... another very good point.

Swing rhythm is important and can be a good learning tool for showing which swings you are pressing on (pressing as in- nerves, causing a poor tempo and mis-timed shot)

Your swing should not change from club to club. Your setup should naturally change and the swing plane will automatically change, because of the club's lie angle.

Thanks for the replies. For me I feel there is a slow evolution as I move up from my wedge to my driver. My stance is widest and the club is furthest with my driver. This does translate into a slightly different swing for me.
