Looking for advice on new Iron Set

I was an avid golfer about 10 years ago and now I just started playing a lot again. I am looking for advice on a good set of irons. I was a low handicap but now feel like I am starting over. What are some good sets out their for game improvement. I haven't kept track of golf equipment technology over the years and it seems over whelming. I am currently still playing Tommy Armour 845's and looking to upgrade. Also, should I see to get club fitted? I am unsure about this because I am still working on getting my swing back on track and don't want something fit to my current swing. Thank you for the help!

Those 845s are a solid set of irons, and will work fine to help you get your swing back. Once things stabilize a little, go for a fitting.

Until then, see if you can find a golf Demo Day and go hit some of the game improvement irons. Lots of technology gain in last 10 years, over and above the irritating marketing hype.

Try out different shafts too, there's a lot of them.

Agreed, the Tommy Armour's should be good enough to work with until you get your swing back to your liking. There are some really nice irons out there now like the Ping G25 or even Rocketbladez. Those irons cater to game improvement as well as mid handicappers out there. I've hit them both and really enjoyed them. I personally use the TaylorMade Tour Preffered MC irons and love them, so if you get a chance, try those as well.

Thanks! Feels great to be back. I was thinking about trying the G20's or the AP1's. How are the Mizuno irons been the last couple years? I'm going to keep hacking away with my 845's but they are pretty beat up since I bought them used 13 years ago.

Try checking out 4golfonline on YouTube he does iron reviews and compares them also the review tab on sandtrap is helpful as well.

In my opinion, iron technology has not changed that much since the 845s. I know a scratch golfer who still uses them. That being said, there are definitely more forgiving irons out there. Pretty much all major golf companies' most forgiving line of irons are of equal caliber and will benefit most golfers. Just choose the one you like the best.

There are a lot of good iron sets out there. I would suggest getting fitted first and then finding a pro shop with multiple demo clubs or going to a demo day. As for brands, I'm partial to Mizuno's forged blades, because in my opinion they are the best feeling irons I've hit. But Taylormade, Cobra, Titleist, Cleveland, etc. all make good clubs. Really depends on how much you're willing to spend and what feels best to you. Getting fitted though is a must. It would be a waste of money to buy a set and months later find out you need a lie or length change. And fitting is almost always free, so there's no risk.

Well, not a total waste if you get clubs that can be adjusted (bent) for lie, eg all forged irons, some cast depending on the metal used. It's only about $4/club to have them changed up to about 2degrees in either direction. And adjusting length is also easy enough. I'd wait though until you're consistent again with the 845s. Tommy Armour must have sold a ton of those - what ever happened to them? Were they absorbed by a mega-company?
