Jesus H! There must have been 1000 commentaries, interviews and associated replays of Van de Velde's meltdown at the '99 Open in the last eight years. And 50 of them this week! In terms of notoriety, losing was the best thing that ever happened to him, but this fascination with big blunders in golf borders on sick. Anyone who follows golf in the least knows all about it now and can mentally replay every frame of video of every shot he hit or mishit. Like a golfing equivalent of the Zapruder film, it is seared in our memories.

How many years will every shot of Sean O'Hair be introduced with the line "the player who had that spectacular collapse at the 2007 PGA... let's go the video of those last few holes".

Sometimes it seems there is more attention paid to failure than success in the golf press, with the exception of Tiger Woods. Give Jean, Sean and the rest of us a break already!

P.S. If you are aching to relive that tournament, here's a good article on the 1999 course set-up and the performance of many players that weekend.

I said similar things in

my live blog . Check it out on the main site and follow along. I do applaud his attitude, both then and now, but I'm tired of hearing about it too.

There is some BIG differences between Van de Velde & O'Hair. All Van de Velde had to do to win the Open Championship (a major) was play the last hole in double bogey. O'Hair was trailing Mickelson at the Players (not a major) & badly needed a birdie to get back in it.

I agree. Leave the poor guy alone - it was bad enough he lost in '99. Do they need to haunt him the rest of his life? And chase him down for interviews 8 years later? Get over it already.

I guess it is a common thread in the media in general... "Train wrecks" make a better news item than "the trains ran on time without incident today". But these guys have to live with their failures and it does not seem fair to replay the "TC Chen" moments at every opportunity.

I'm surprised they have not clubbed Bjorn over the head more for taking thee shots to get out of a greenside bunker, thereby handing the Open to Ben Curtis.

I personally love watching anything about Van De Velde. What a disaster that was. I think the comedic height of the whole thing isn't when he's standing in the creek with no shoes on, as is the easy choice, but rather the fact that he NEVER TAKES OFF HIS GLOVE when hes putting his shoes and socks back on. It is getting a little old, but I laugh whenever he's mentioned.

Home Course:
Town of Colonie (69.7-70.1, 119-125)

Lol...I think VdV is getting ready to write a "Thank You" note to Padraig Harrington as we speak. From now on it will be endless shots of Harrington's ball almost making it over the footbridge if he doesn't win.

And we'll know in just a few minutes.....

On a related note, I dont think I could have handled one more of those commmercials of Nicklaus with his foot on the bridge at St Andrews as though he conquered the place. Put me in the younger generation if you want, but I can't stand Nicklaus' ego.

Not sure what your age has to do with it. I know a lot of young-uns who would concede that anyone with a career record like...

    • This. Aaaannnnd.... this.  Our Wednesday Night league uses that MLR and it definitely helps pace of play.  The ONLY issue that we've ever had has now kind of gone away. A few years back they started using the rule and there were a number of arguments about if the person was hitting 4 or hitting 3. Some players were pretty adamant that they were now hitting 3. The folks who actually knew the rule of course knew that they should be hitting 4. I say that and also let you know that there were actually golfers who thought going OB means you drop near OB and are now hitting 3.
    • I've come across a unique situation for handicapping, and with the changes to 10-17 hole round posting, I'm not 100% sure how to handle it. Right now, my home course is re-doing a few holes. 2 holes are playing to temporary greens (holes 4 and 9). I played in a match 2 days ago at this course, and the person that normally posts the scores has no idea how to handle this. I'm not entirely sure what he's thinking, but it seems like he's operating under the old rules where you'd just post par plus handicap strokes for any holes not played.  I think the correct way to do this now is not post scores for holes 4 and 9 and the expected score algorithm will take care of this. Is that correct? I've poked around the handicap manual and that seems to make the most sense, but the clarifications to handicap rule 3.2b are tripping me up a bit. As far as I know, the course has not gotten the CGA to do anything like temporarily re-rate the course or to tell everyone to score net par on the closed holes. I think that means we're in expected score land, but I wanted to see what others thought here.
    • 22 points in a gross Stableford is solid. Nice job.
    • I use a putting mirror often. Mine also lets you put the tees in it to set up barriers on either side of your putter to make sure I'm striking the ball near the center of the putter face.  In fact, I putt with the mirror at least weekly on my indoor mat. Opinions are like backsides; Everyone has one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks. But in my opinion it really helps. I have a tendency if left unchecked to get my eyeline way inside the target line. Using a putting mirror regularly keeps my set up way more consistent. I don't know if I can back it up with any data but "I believe" it has lead to far greater putting consistency over the past few years.  I also like gates. There are a few gate drills I think help. Basically day-15 of the 30-day Covid Challenge: Check it out here: I actually have a set of putting gates, which my mom got me for Christmas about 10 years ago. But you can use anything from golf balls to soup cans.  I also have a "Perfect Putt" and I like it but wouldn't swear by it. I will say it travels well and I've been known to bring it with me on trips and putt in my hotel room with it.  Lastly, I have a set of Devil Balls.  Amazon.com I'm not impressed with the Devil Balls. I actually don't like them at all. If you'd like the set I have I'll send them to anyone who's willing to pay the shipping.
