Hi, guys. im pretty new to all this, so i apologise if this post has already been covered or is in the wrong section.

Basicaly, about 2 months ago, i had a free golf mot from a well known golf retailer in the uk, it all seemed pretty rushed and helf hearted,in fact the only good that come of the day was my irons were cleaned relatively well. heyho, it was free, what more can you expect.

anyway, come the end of the session while we was wraping up and about to end, i reminded the guy that he was supposed to recommened me a ball based on my swing speed, and ball flight tendancies. almost instantly i was recomended the bridgestone e7, although i never had the chance to use the launch monitor that was advertised, so i cant really see how the assistant could make an informed recomendation. nevertheless i took his advice, and off i went to buy 2 dozen bridgestone e7 lake balls.

i had never relly looked into the e7 while playing it, so earlier today when i looked to see how much they cost new, i was shocked to find they were branded as 'pure distance' as i have been able to keep them on the fairways fairly well, and my home course is TIGHT to say the least! usually a distance ball would be playing all over the place (except the fairways), so i was wondering if bridgestone had implemented some sort of anti side spin into the ball, although i can easily hit a fade, or trusted draw just as easily as a nice long straight shot.

my only problem with this ball is that its almost impossible to get the ball to drop and stop on the greens, especially at my home course as the greens and super quick, and probably wont hold even the softest of balls. but a little help wouldnt hurt.

basically, i was wondering if changing from the bridgestone e7 to the b330 will make a big differnce within my longer irons, fairway woods and driver. i can really trust myself and the e7 from the tee. i can confidently swing my driver at around 92mph and find my ball 270yards further down the fairway. i was wondering if the technology is much different in the b330 that is going to reveal some fatal flaws in my swing and send me hunting in the holly bushes and nettles.

has anybody gamed both balls? what is your verdicts?

thanks for your help, Mitch.

I find a good deal of difference in the e series vs the 330 series. I have not used the 7's but have used 5's an 6's. The difference to me is like the difference in the DT or NXT vs the ProV's in Titleist. At your swing speed, try the b330 RX or RXS-the S having a little more spin.

Found and played an old proV1 on the course today, was swinging well for once so I was hitting a fair amount of fairways. Quite liked the ball, may have to put it into practice for a few rounds. When swinging badly, hooking and slicing, which ball would slice/hook with the worst reaults. The e7 or the proV1. The reason I ask is that everyone knows that dostance balls are prone to be very slippery through the air caused them to hook and slice violently, and aball like the proV1 is built to be able to put maximum spin on the ball.. So would a slice be more or less violent with the proV??

Really? Everyone knows that? I've never heard of such a thing... A ProV is going to hook or slice more. Also with a swing speed of 92mph you're not sniffing 270 yards unless it's on your second shot...

I have managed to slice a low spin ball just as bad as a tour ball so to me the difference is not very noticeable.  If you slice a prov1 violently you just need to learn how not to slice it violently.  It would be interesting to see how many more yards a tour ball slices right compared to low side spin ball.

I've wondered that too. I can tell you from first hand experience that a Bridgestone E6 can definitely be "mega-sliced", especially off a driver. Wonder if a tour level ball will slice more? I can't imagine that is possible! LOL!

Appreciate your sarcasm, but possibly a little more clarity as to what you are being sarcastic about would make it a little more funny. Not by much, but a little. Secondly, I havent been on a launch monitor recently so I do apologise if "92mph" is not exact. But what i can be as exact as my gps tells me, when im on a 408y hole and i reach for the big stick, hit a cracking draw, walk to my ball, look at my gps watch and it tells me my approach shot is 135y then no, i was sniffing at 270y, i went over it. Thanks for replying, but if you have nothing constructive or helpful to say, please dont waste my time or your own.

Well distance balls aren't slippery through the air.  Distance balls are usually lower compression balls that give a little boost in yardage to people with a lower swing speed.  Also distance balls are usually designed with very low side spin which in theory is supposed to slice or hook less when mishit.

If you are new to golf and driving the ball 270, you do not need distance to improve your scores. You most likely need short game control. Choose your ball based on:

-- which balls feel best off your putter. then,

-- which of those react the way you want on chips around the green. then,

-- which of those react with the spin you want on full short iron shots. then,

-- which of those are longest and straightest off the tee.

E7 is designed to be low spin including around the greens. Does not work for me. E6 is better around the greens (and supposed to be even better this year) but still releases too much on full irons for me. B330-RX is my ball of choice even though the E6 is much longer off the tee for my swing. Try a sleeve of B330-RX's and see if the driving distance loss is worth the feel around the greens.

BTW, E6, B330-RX and E7 are all designed to fly straighter. They will not fix a slice BUT I find the dual dimple pattern holds its line a better in the wind.

The Pro V1 is always going to spin more than the E7, simply because its a higher spin ball.  How much more is a good question and really is a case by case basis and is something that each person really needs to asses their game and determine if the added distance and straighter shots is more important than control in the short game and on approach shots.

One thing you might want to consider is switching to the E5.  Its a 2-piece distance ball but it has a urethane cover, just like a tour ball; so its a good compromise between the 2.

Thanks guys. I had always believed distance balls were really quite prone to being very wayward when struck slightly wrong. But then I guess thats the beauty of these forums. Im not exactly new to golf, but the last 2years I have started playing at least twice a week, compared to the few times yearly from 14-20 (before that was almost everyday) I dont suffer from hooks or slices, but I do like to shape my shots from the tee. Preferably a draw. The reason I am asking on the difference between the balls is that if I was to change my balls, (mind the pun) so drastically, im worried that ill step up to yhe firat tee, full of confidence, execute my normal in-out-in swing path and the balls draws an extra 15yards in flight andbon my course that ends up nowhere to be found. Im glad I asked, and you guys answered as by the sounds of your responses, thats exactly what would of happened!!!

I believe my first point was constructive, helpful, and most of all, accurate. Peace out, bro.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
