X-20 or Big Bertha?

I am a 17 handicapper and have been playing for two years now. I am considering purchasing a good set of irons in the next year or so. I have heard great things about Callaway and have hit both the X-20s and the Big Berthas. Are the X-20s designed for someone of my experience level, or should I stick with the Big Berthas? Does anyone have any other suggestions for irons?

Definitely the Big Bertha's. The X-20's are good, but the feel of the Big Bertha's is unmatched for a higher handicapper.

Whoa diagree big time, x-20's are amazing irons, also the best thing is that they'll grow on you. x-20's were voted best game improvement irons for a reason, performance. But hit both and make the descision there.

You are definetly experienced enough to hit the X-20's. I recently bought them, these irons can help anyone shave strokes off there game. I just shot in the low 80's 4 times in the last two weeks and I'm realizing these irons have alot to do with low scores. Golf Digest rated them the best game improvement iron out there. Make sure you get fitted and I guarantee you'll love them.

I would hit both of them and see what you like better. But then it sounds like you haven't hit anything new recently, so why limit yourself to just Callaway? Hit everything your nearest golf store or pro shop has! You aren't going to be buying new irons every year. I think you owe it to yourself to check out everything. Plus, it is a blast to do.

In no way am I talking bad about Callaway either. I just purchased a new set of X-20 Tours.

I never said they were bad, but feel makes a difference. It's all up to the player.

I just recently bought a used set of '04 berthas. They helped my game immediately. They are great clubs for hackers such as myself. They make it so that you don't have to have a perfect swing. I don't plan on taking lessons or trying to be too serious about the game. These clubs serve the purpose of allowing me to play the game. I had an older set of DCI's and I simply could not hit the ball straight.

I would say x-20 irons. Reason being that the big berthas are designed for the higher handicapper (around 19+) but I think the x-20s are designed for mid handicappers. If you want to buy them cheaply, buy them off of ebay in the winter. I did and got a set of basically new 2006 big bertha irons for £190 + £20 postage. It was a good deal.

As a 17 handicap, (improving?) peference and style of play is the issue. If you want maximum height, don't try to work the ball, and don't mind the wide sole on short irons go Big Bertha. If you are trying to learn to work the ball or hit many knockdowns, or don't like wide soles in your short irons go with X-20s. I do agree x-20s are aimed at slightly better or at least younger golfers. My experience was that the middle irons on berthas were great but the short irons tended to balloon. I liked the short irons and wedges on the X-20s better. I think this version of x's kind of blurs the line between the clubs. I actually prefer the x-18s.
