Today on hole 5 my playing partner matted the sand down in the bunker behind his ball before he took the shot.  He himself did not access himself the two stroke penalty but I always make mental notes of his actual score when I play with him.  He then proceeded to play the ball to 4 feet and "Par" the hole.  He always has a heck of a time out of bunkers even when he does ground the club.  So do you think its legit to give yourself a lie in the bunker to make sure you get out?  I mean if its gonna take you 3-4 shots to get out you might as well.

I was looking through the rules trying to find other examples that might work, but I couldn't find any that stuck out.

That's ridiculous.  It's a 2 stroke penalty, right?  Unless it's a fried egg, it's not the lie that's causing him to take multiple shots out of the bunker, and even if it is a fried egg of the worst kind, surely his first shot will fix that, even if it doesn't get out of the bunker.

If it normally takes him (or whoever) 3 to get out of a bunker, forget trying to circumvent the rules, practice getting out of a bunker.  Frankly, once anybody understands the premise behind how to do it (the physics of it, basically), it's really effing easy.

I agree with Golfingdad.  A ball that is down in the sand is played differently, so he should practice that.

Isn't the rule for knowingly breaking a rule to gain advantage DQ not the usual 2 strokes for doing it accidently?

No idea ... but if so, all the more reason that the idea is absurd.

I'd just question him as to why he's scoring.

Say to him "If you are going to score, you'll have to add strokes for X... otherwise we'll just have a hit."

Not sure why you ask if it's legit for him to cheat.

Maybe you should head ove rto the practice bunker one afternoon with him.

Bunker shots aren't that hard but some people do everything wrong. They can be helped in 5 minutes.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • I  had to return to boast  just a  bit. Everyone  knows  i thought  this  is  how the Championship should  be decided. Match play is far  better than stroke  play to determine a  champion and  its  much closer to most sports  playoffs. Lose and you are  out.     Promotion, relegation and match play: PGA Tour unveils radical new structure The PGA Tour has revealed its planned changes to its competitive model, schedule and playoffs, changes that will be more substantial than any in the Tour's half-century-long history. How will the PGA Tour series wrap up its season? The current PGA Tour playoff format consists of three stroke-play events, concluding with the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Starting in 2028, the Tour's playoff system will feature match play, and will rotate through various courses. Further details will be revealed at this year's Tour Championship next month.
    • Posted a couple swings here. I think my attempt to blend the movement still results in a more “around” back swing?
    • I never heard dislike for them.  From my perspective, they are just like any other club. Though, they were always probably over-priced, until recently as other club manufacturers have been raising prices the past 5+ years. You had to wait for them to go on sale, which you can get them closer to other club manufacturers.  They sell good clubs. Nothing crazy..
    • Why do so many people dislike PXG clubs and constantly criticize them? All the folks at my club and especially online, I never hear good things about them except from people who bought them and defend them. They look fine to me but curious is there some sort of quality issue or is it just stereotyping the buyers.
    • I have the LM1 launch monitor and I’ve been very impressed. I agree with your assessment and it’s very accurate for me and ease of use is wonderful. The price point of $199 is very hard to beat with this form factor and performance. I was previously using a PRGR.
