Does anyone know why there is a half hour gap between the time when tournament coverage ends on TGC and when it begins on CBS?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Because the commentators like people to pay attention to them for a half hour, strokes their ego... Drives me crazy golf is Actaully being played and we are watching them talk.

I couldn't help but notice that you're also from So. Cal. Everything we watch is delayed.

I wondered the same thing yesterday. Worked out for me as I was able to run to the store for the wife.

Sigh.  I must be a really lousy communicator.

I'm not talking about a delay I am talking abut a gap.  Golf Channel coverage ended at 10:30 AM (1:30 PM eastern time) and CBS coverage started at 11:00 AM (2:00 PM eastern time).  Causing us to miss holes 2 & 3 for Tiger on Saturday.

I think that you are just looking at it backwards.  It wasn't all that long ago that golf was on CBS (or whichever network had that weeks tournament) and CBS only.  And it still didn't come on until noon.  So, it's not that you are NOT getting to watch golf from 11:30-12 so much right now ... it's moreso that you ARE getting to watch golf from 10-11:30.  Know what I mean??

But, to answer your question ... I don't know.  I think that oftentimes the half hour just prior to the coverage is some golf, or at least sports, related nonsense, so presumably CBS wants you to watch that.  Whatever it is, it's safe to say that CBS has the "rights" from 11:30 and on.

Ah yes, gap. I rarely watch TV (almost never). Never new that they showed every hole. I assumed there are always commercials or network related stuff.

Sure, I even remember when all we saw was the last 4-5 holes on Saturday and Sunday.  But it just seems strange that in the middle of this combined coverage there would be a half hour gap.  I certainly appreciate the huge increase in the amount of golf that is televised.

Yeah, I certainly don't know the exact reason, but something to do with TV "rights" I'm sure.

Slightly related side note: I used to be a subscriber to the "extra innings" package on cable for all of the MLB games and I remember how annoying it was that ANY game that started during the day on Saturday (like, before 4pm Pacific or something like that) would be blacked out everywhere, regardless of market, simply because fox owned the national rights to that block of time.  If you weren't going to watch your local game, then dagnammit, you were watching whichever game Fox aired (usually Yankees versus somebody ;)) or else you weren't watching baseball at all.

TL;DR ... Tv networks are a-holes.

I've assumed it was some contractual oddity. It doesn't happen with NBC though, presumably because NBC and GC are the same company. Yeah, I'm sure it is, but they had to have known it was there when they did the negotiating.  I'm just wondering why they did it.  It isn't as if it is to anyone's advantage, as far as I can see.  Weird.

The coverage that is provided to Sky in the UK also has the gap, even though there is no change in UK provider. So we get to listen to 30 minutes of Denis Pugh ramble on about someone's swing.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
