New to the forum and just getting back into the game after a being away from it for a fairly lenghty time. I would really like to focus more of my time working on improving my overall short-game but, like many I suppose, I do not have regular access to a great practice facility. I live close to a driving range and usually get out there at least twice a week but the hitting surface isn't real grass and there is no chipping and/or putting area to practice on. I do work on my putting at home and practice chip shots in my backyard but, honestly, it seems as though the best chances I ever really get to work on my short game is when I'm playing alone (and no one's behind me, of course) and I get to hit an extra ball or two on or around the green before I move on to the next tee. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's not much to suggest so far as putting if you are already practicing the best you can at home and don't have access to a green. If you have the right sort of carpet you can probably do okay at home, if not, well a real putting green would help. However, you may be able to do a bit better than the back yard for pitching and longer wedge shots if you keep your eye out for likely spots. All you need is a decent size open lawn. Obviously, private property is just that without permission from the owner, but a number of public parks around here have open spaces where you could probably practice, your neighborhood may also. Not taking big divots would help with your reception. And I used to work at a university that had some pretty large mowed areas that people would regularly practice their golf on. Perhaps you can find some place similar that will let you practice longer shots than most back yards can support.

Although I have access to short game areas, they are a hassle to get to. When I'm too lazy to go, I play 9 holes when it is slow/empty. I play the first few holes and when I get to an hole that's relatively quiet, I start playing 75 yards and in. If there are people behind me, I let them through and keep doing my thing. I might let several groups through. I keep proceeding through each hole, practicing bunker shots, putting, etc...

I've seen more than a few people do this as well, but I'm not sure as to the ethics of this. I play from areas where I won't take out a whole lot of grass and try to minimize wear and tear on the course.

Sometimes the green fee doing this is cheaper than the short game facility fee. I sure save a lot of time driving and gas as well.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

    • Just add new stats of speed of play to the tour. Average time to hit a shot Number of shots per round the player took more than 40 seconds to play a shot Number of times under the clock Numbers of warnings per round for slow play Number of penalty strokes per round for slow play  Number of times the player took a WC break. Time spend on the WC  Number of times the player don't know basic rules and have to call for a rules official  Walking average speed Time spend reading yardage books Time spend arguing with the caddie about hitting an impossible shot.  Average time looking for a ball beyond 3 minutes.  Average time looking for balls on the hazards despite been in the middle of the fairway An a lot more that can give the committee enough information to award penalties after a round, tournament or even a season. Imagine a ruling were a player is awarded to play all April with 1 shot penalty each round because of slow play in March, should be a shit show I would love to see.
    • I agree. I like the Mission Impossible movies. None of them are life changing or movies that I would put in any kind of a top ten list. But they are pretty much always keep me entertained.
    • Might be good. Part 1 was only okay.
