If you are over 40, then some back soreness is to be expected.  If it is really painful, then it could be a medical problem or maybe there is something in your swing that is causing too much pressure.  Golfers make swing changes throughout their lives to adjust to the changes of aging.

I'm 52 and I'm experiencing lower back pain on my right side and back spasms at night and first thing in the morning.  I'm right handed.  I've always had poor posture and I'm either working in front of a computer or traveling by car or plane.  I'm trying all the following and it seems to help a great deal.  I don't know which of these help the most, but I was desperate, so I'm doing a "full assault."

Have you guys seen this thread?

^ Mike, thanks for pointing that thread out.  I saw the topic and have been meaning to read it.  I read the first page and, now, I remember Tim Clark talking about how you should have your back slightly rounded.  Maybe I can get rid of all my "treatments!"

I have been playing/practicing a lot of golf lately and have some soreness that is nearly an injury in my upper back. My best guess is that this is due to me creating a lot of rotational torque/force in my swing to generate the power to hit a strong golf shot. I do not feel that I am trying to over swing or hit as hard as I can, it is just the pace which feels comfortable (which is still pretty aggressive). But lately I have noticed that I am having some significant soreness around my spine between my shoulder blades and is causing some intense pain for a few days. It got to the point where I wondered if I was going to seriously injure myself. The odd thing is the way in which it hurts. If I make certain movements (ones which cause torque by my arms being extended) I have intense pain to the point where I cringe and almost am unable to do that movement. For example, I leaned over the kitchen counter to grab a bottle of water with my arms extended, and it hurt so much to lift the bottle up that I had to let go. However, other movements are just fine and I can do weight bearing exercises just fine. I was originally worried that I was causing some sort of issues in my spine, like disc related problems, but after paying attention to how and where it hurts, it more feels like it is just muscle related pain that is right next to the spine. My question is, does anyone have suggestions on the best ways to: 1. Recover from muscle soreness 2. Work out to strengthen these muscles so I don't have soreness I have a feeling that this might just be a break in period and that as long as I give myself some rest, the muscles will get better over time and won't be an issue. I just want to do what I can in the mean time to prevent major injury. Thanks!

it's been a while since you posted this, I'm curious if you had thoracic back surgery since this happened?

Protein shakes with Amino acids are the best way to recover sore muscles. Also, resistance bands are best to strengthen bad backs. Better than free weights if your injured.

I frequently suffer from Sciatica and/or Piriformous Syndrome, which is pain in the back that extends down to my knees. I find that when I start off my season I am commonly plagued with a sore back. I know that through the winter I try to keep up with the exercise, because golfing uses a whole different set of muscles than normal day to day tasks, I've started to work out and use the same rotation that I would with a golf swing, just to keep those muscles limber.

I have found that having a hot shower to relax the muscles helps as well, or a nice massage -- if you can find a deep tissue massage it's amazing!

Look up an ice pack on amazon that would help in case of any inflammation, I have found inflammation itself will cause pain because of all the nerves in the back.

Good luck!!

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
    • I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
