Two of the four some in front of us yesterday waited for us on a par 3 hole after their tee off.   They waited there to tell us that we (my wife and I) can pass through.  They were on a pace for 5 hour round but we were in no hurry and I insisted that they go ahead on their usual pace.   It was nice of them to wait, instead of our catching up to them.

There's a guy at our club that's about 10 years younger than me. He's a much better golfer, about a 10 HDCP. We're both interested in golf club design, and tweaking our clubs. We talk about equipment a lot when we meet.

Last summer he let me hit his Bridgestone J36 irons with a Nippon NS Pro shaft, and I got a feel the lighter weight stiff shaft. It got me thinking about the intersection of shaft weight and flex.

Anyway, I watched him hit a few shots on the range last week. He was a lot smoother on his swing than I was, and was hitting the ball farther with less effort.

I took the hint, and started smoothing out my swing and finishing high rather than drifting into pressing for extra yardage. Behold, the slower I swung the club, the farther the ball went. The range session ended with me hitting four nice, fairly high 4i shots off the turf - went out about 180 yards with good shape. Came back later that week, played a couple of holes, and hit the ball decently (no wild ones).

It seems each year as the season winds down, I start to notice little things about my swing that got "lost in the shuffle" when worrying about playing for HDCP. If I can pick up a club a couple of times a month this winter, maybe I can start with more momentum for 2014.

Thanks, Norm, for demonstrating a smooth swing.

Focus, connect and follow through!
