All I know is I absolutely, positively HATE hitting off mats.  It seems every other time I do it I end up getting banged up from a funky swing.

Good grass, cold drinks, friendly staff, and clean facilities goes a long way.  Oh and decent range balls.

The only range I go to in my area now is the one that bulldozed and leveled an enormous area and seeded it.  It's exactly like hitting off the fairway now.

we have two of those now in the area - it's big enough that the rotation of hitting lines allow the areas to heal before the next cycle.  AND, people "mostly" there seem to be able to work their divot lines cleanly - so that's a plus.  One near work, one near my home.

- the other place near work is pretty much hitting off of hard dirt when it's dry, and wet mats when it's wet

I don't tell ANYONE about the good place.  selfish...yes.  but I get to practice on good grass.

Not me. I prefer good mats to sandy ranges that pit the face of my clubs. I get unlimited range with my seasonal membership and our range is pretty good but I rarely use it. When I do I just hit wedges if I feel I need to warm up because they are already beat from the bunkers. More often than not I'll use the pitching green for that.

This is where I would happily spend the rest of my life banging away. (Insert picture of Kate Upton.)

No, seriously. Pearl Valley. Out of shot is the "hydration station", which is full of ice cold bottled water and beer.

ECG has a cooler full of Poland Spring for $1 a bottle. That one sounds like more fun.
