Who yells "Get in the hole"? Morons, imbeciles, and idiots. As defined by Wechsler in pyschological studies, people with an IQ below 20 are idiots, between 20 and 50 are imbeciles, and 50-70 are morons. According to IQ distributions, 2.14% of the population has an IQ below 70. If one assumes that there are about 25,000 spectators at a golf event on a particular day, this means that over 530 people on the course fall into that category, or about 30 per hole. With that many morons, imbeciles, and idiots standing watching a tee shot, it's a wonder that we don't hear this incredibly annoying blabbering cry for self-recognition more often!

Interesting (and statistically sound) analysis, esp. since there's little evidence that the distribution of IQ amongst golf fans differs significantly from that of the general public.

Yet it's just not a very satisfying way of looking at it. After all, not that many years ago (well within my memory - yours too probably), almost noone made such a public spectacle of themselves at a tournament. There was a different attitude to the game - I won't try to characterize it here but we've lost a lot IMO. it's a marker of broader changes in society - and not for the better IMO. The idiots/morons/imbeciles were always there, it's just that now they don't mind revealing exactly who they are for all to see. Something to be proud of apparently.

I try to do it mid-swing...with my feathered hair flowing. I have a Jack Hamm tour bag...it's worth a billion dollars and has Zolex zippers and a strap that fits every carrying style.

Who was that national driving champion who used to scream like Arnold Swartz lifting weights? He also made his own driver... the HAMMER! We need more of that kind of scream.

I find it hilarious (and super annoying) that people yell this from the fairways, because, so far nobody's predicted it correctly. They yell "Get in the hole!" as if it's a guess. I just wanna be there and say to them after "HA! You were WRONG! It missed!!". And then for the next guys shot, I'd yell "Miss The Hole!" or "Get on the green!!".

I noticed though that I didn't hear it once while watching last November/December's Australian tournaments. Admittedly I didn't watch every minute of them, but it's something I've never really heard. Except, perhaps when someone's putting at birdie... Then I'd say it's ok to yell "Get in the hole!"

A couple years ago Tiger was playing a tournament somewhere. He'd driven it into the right rough and had to play his 2nd in between the spectators. He had a tree infront of him that I think he decided to try and fade around. Well, he hits the ball, and someone starts screaming "YEAH! YEAH! WHOOOOO! YEAH!! YEAH!! YEAHHHHHHHH! WOOOOOOOO!"

The ball ended up about 20yd short of the green, in the right rough behind a bunker. Reverse footage (from infront of Tigers left arm) clearly showed the culprit. Some 30-40 year old, with a goatee, standing front row, right behind Tiger. He was clapping so hard I thought he'd broken a wrist for sure! I guess he was just REALLY excited about seeing Tiger's swing from 6 feet away??

And this was the Masters too. Relatively tame compared to a normal tournament. Or, say, the WM Open at TPC Scottsdale.

My boss is convinced they edit in the "Get in the hole!" scream on broadcast because back when he worked for the golf channel and got free tickets to the bay hill every year, he never once heard anyone scream it :P

That might be possible?? I went to the Acenture match play in Marana, AZ and the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale, AZ and I can't recall anyone yelling that.

I only say "get in the hole" in the bedroom when the lights are off.

Got to admit that it does down grade the golf coverage from the states.

The other tours may have weaker golfers , but not hearing a goose shouting makes up for it.

I find the whole thing incredibly annoying and stupid, especially for the asshat who thinks it is funny to yell it on a par 5 like they are the first one who has ever done it. Those people fall into the same category with the infamous "first" posters on the comment section of yahoo articles.

I haven't watched golf on TV for quite a few years but I did watch The Masters last week. What's up with those fans who scream "Get In The Hole" ? Most people cheer when a putt drops, or say 'awww' when it just misses, but then there are those people who are screaming at the ball while it is in motion.

I dunno, but I wish "Get In The Hole" guy would STFU!, especially on par 5's
