Alright, heres the deal. A week ago i had golf tryouts, and i didnt do too bad, but i made 4th spot on varsity. Now, a week later, a couple days ago, i just couldnt hit a golf ball anymore. I can still chip, putt, and hit my woods and hybrids good, its just my irons i cannot hit. My stance and swing feel exactly the same, but i just can't determine what im doing wrong. When i swing my iron i just hit a low slice, like a really bad shank. When i used to be able to hit the ball good, the sound of the ball coming off the clubface would be dull, but now when i hit it bad its a loud click. Its doing this with all of my irons. Could i just be coming over the top now? And please respond as soon as you can, my season starts tomorrow and i have 2 big tournaments and a match.

Sounds like you might be coming over the top and hitting some hosel rockets. Back up and inch or two from the ball, and slow your swing down until you start making solid contact again. Once you do, you can work on speeding your swing back up to normal speed, making sure that you are still getting the contact you desire. Focus on keeping your left arm and chest connected(for a righty) so you can get rid of the casting motion at the top of your backswing.

Here is a drill to stop the shanks. Take 2 balls and put them in a line about 3 inches apart perpindicular to your stance. Address the outside ball (the ball furthest from you) and hit the inside ball(the ball closest to you). This should get you coming more inside and stop the over the top move. You can also do this on the course while playing just address an imaginary ball outside your ball. Try it out, it has worked for me in the past.

I've had some similar problems from time to time. The most frustrating thing is it can happen at any time and usually when it does my irons totally desert me. My problems have generally been due to allowing my swing plane to get too flat. Generally I can sort it out by focusing on a good one piece takeaway making sure that the club doesn't come inside too early.

I was doing the exact same thing a couple weeks ago man. I just relaxed, had confidence and stook back further from the ball. I know what your doing and Im pretty sure your opening the club face hugely at impact, it may not seem like it. I was swinging normal also when this happened. Also, check if your feet are too close together. Have confidence, and move your hands more towards the top of the grip, and tighten a little bit.

1. post up on a firm left leg, and deliver from the inside.

2. feel like your tucking the right elbow into the right hip on the downswing.

If you remember these two you should be able to work the rest out easily. Good luck to ya!

    • Played Musgrove Mill GC today. 72.3/155. First round in 4 weeks and shot 44-39. 2 triple bogies on the front and horseshoed 4 putts today. Overall, 10 fairways, 8 GIR and 31 putts.  Set a goal today to par the 3 toughest holes (4, 18 and 9) and birdie 10 or 12 (which I have never birdied). Parred 4, 9 and birdied 10. Crushed my drive on 18 and had 139 left, but in casual water. Dropped back a little ways and took an extra club. Hit my 8-iron well but it came up short. Bunker shot from wet sand left me an 18’ for my goal. Read the break well but perhaps an inch too much break, and a touch heavy on the speed. Ball circled the hole 270* and tapped in for a bogey. Handicap dropped 0.1.
