I was at the golf shop and picked up a Nike Sumo for $19. The shaft looked fine, and the head has a very clean top and face... After I got home I saw a small dent on the bottom of the head as though someone got ticked and slammed it to the ground. It's not big, but it's there....

Question : Will this have any effect on playability (loft, lie, etc..)

It was cheap, and I was bored, so I bought it.

Interestingly, I googled dent on bottom of driver head and I got a lot of results for the same dent, in the same driver.

Everyone says to play the club, but this tells me that the sumo driver is a POS.

I doubt this will effect the performance of my driver.... so I am changing my question to this.

Will this dent effect the performance of when I slam the head into the ground after I hit the ball into the lake? I'm afraid the aerodynamics are thrown off and as I grab the club to do a full force slam, that those small dents will decrease the amount of air flow, thus reducing the odds of burying my driver head 5" into the tee box.

I guess the only way to tell it to go in the front yard and practice.

Bored much?

Bored... Are you kidding me? You're in OH, so you're getting similar weather... I'm about to go insane!

Yeah, we didn't get the snow they predicted, but my thermometer on my front porch says -4*F. :-( If you go out and pound it on the ground now, it may shatter into tiny little pieces.

Actually the dents should act much like the dimples on a golf ball and produce better aerodynamic air flow thus increasing head speed... You may improve the clubs performance by giving it a few more "love taps"! And I'm feeling your weather related pain... Mid Missouri here and it's -7 with a 25 below wind chill and 8 inches of blowing drifting snow. But since it's Missouri and subject to insane changes in the weather, I was in my back yard hitting golf balls just this past Wednesday and could be doing the same by this time next week! Keeping my fingers crossed!

It shouldn't effect playability.  I googled it as well and that does seem to be a common problem with the Sumo drivers, one guy said he put a dent in it by topping a tee shot

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
