I was at golf galaxy yesterday as I cleaned out many of my old golf clubs and the guy there talked me into trying a few different clubs (irons).  I had just purchased my Rocketbladz last September and got the stiff shafts with the TM shafts.  I hit lots of balls with the 7 iron for the Speedbladez and then I wanted to compare so I asked for a 7 iron that had the same specs as my Rocketbladez.

BTW, there was not really any difference between the two that I could notice.  With my Rocketbladez, I averaged a swing speed of 75 mph with the 7 iron.  I also did not warm up at all and did not even have a glove.  Still the shots were going consistently 170-175 yards.  That seems long to me as I do not hit my 7 iron that far usually outside.  I tried doing some research and from what I found on the internet, a 75mph swing speed for a 7 iron should have my ball traveling 145 yards?  That does not make sense either as in reality my 7 iron goes 150 - 160 usually on average.

Assuming that the 75mph average is correct with my 7 iron, I am guessing that the launch monitor distance was not correct, right?  I just got rid of my old irons because they were regular shafted and were not strong enough for me, or so it seemed.  Should I be playing stiff shafts with a swing speed of 75mph?  For what it's worth my 9 iron goes up to 135 outside, although I always swing smooth and never try to kill/muscle it.  My 8 iron goes up to 145 or so and my 7 iron goes up to 155/160.  My 6 iron usually goes about 165 but, I do not swing it as much as my 7/8/9 and because there are lots of variables and because I do not hit 4/5/6 as much as 7/8/9, I am much more consistent distance wise with the shorter clubs than the longer ones.

Does this data sound right or am I missing something?  Am I playing the right shaft flex based on this info?  For what it's worth, my shot shape is a gentle draw and it's medium in height (it was higher when I was playing regular flex but now not quite as high).  My miss is not staying connecting and casting which causes a left hook.  Occasionally I will leave it out to the right if I let my right shoulder fly out right after contact but that does not happen as much.  I know that it's hard to give a precise answer but I am just looking for a general idea based on the information I've provided since I was able to get some data on my swing.  Thanks.

Probably carry. I would think you need at least 79 SS for that carry, though. That's with a really solid hit. More likely, most of us would need an 81 mph or more for that kind of carry.

Some of the swings were above 75, I just used the average.  I wish I took a picture, but I did not.  I'm not sure what the highest was but I know that it was more than 75mph.  The longest distance that I had was 182 but that included roll out....

That's either quite amazing technology for the club, or there might be an issue with the way the simulator was setup. Maybe it was setup for a course in Utah or Colorado at 7000 feet at 90 degrees F?

As for your actual course distances, maybe your swing speed is faster on the course?

So it appears that what I was thinking was right, there is no way that my swing speeds on the launch monitor at Golf Galaxy would have equaled the shown distances in most conditions?

I'm wondering if that is the way that they have that machine set up?  I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but if that were the case it would make it seem as though the clubs that they are selling go much further!  When I asked for a Rocketbladez the same as the one I own to compare it to, I do remember the guy not understanding what I was asking and seeming a bit flustered.  Again, it could be coincidence and I do not want to accuse anyone of anything.  It is also possible that the launch monitor is set up so that it shows favorable distances.  Granted the roll out was included, I know that the average was 75mph, this I am certain because I say the average of my swings in a chart......something to maybe keep in mind when you go to try out new clubs at various stores, just how accurate is the data on the clubs that you are trying out versus real golf conditions?

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
