Roasting in the Midwest

Hello, All. I'm a full-time cyber-commuting programmer living in the St. Louis area. (Where at least the heat is supposed to break this weekend finally.)

I used to play golf quite a bit back in high school, but I was never very good at it. I was a JV alternate on the golf team for one year, and was cut from the team the following year. In college and since I haven't played much, maybe a couple times a year.

This Spring (or perhaps it was early this Summer) I started getting out a few times again and rediscovered "the bug." I've been bitten hard. It helps that we moved last Fall to an area with several courses in the immediate vicinity (a 5-15 minute drive), including at least one that I can walk on to in the middle of a weekday afternoon without waiting to play a quick nine.

Fortunately it would seem that ten years or so of infrequent play hasn't done much harm to my skills, such as they were. I still shoot low-to-mid 90s for 18. I've broken 90 twice this season in seven or eight 18-hole rounds. My handicap, so far as I can tell, is hovering around the high teens and low 20s.

My ball striking is okay, just the occasional mis-hit or slice that gets me into trouble. My putting and short game in general are definitely the weakest parts of my game. So I'm trying to work on improving those and my mental approach to the game.
