How long were you playing until you broke 100?

It took me a year and a half, with a decent amount of lessons. First time was early last summer proceeded to keep it in the mid to low 90's all summer (save for a few bad rounds). However, once winter rolled around and play became more infrequent my game has slipped a bit. Haven't broke 100 since late November (didn't play in December/limited practice, one round in January, two in February, two in March). However, haven't shot over 103 so I've been close, just really suffering with pitching/chipping right now - so bad I had an entire lesson devoted to it a few days ago. Stay patient. What I've been told from my instructor and friends who are low single digits is improvement comes in waves. You'll see your scores drop, then go up again, then drop more, then up again, etc. The important thing is recognizing where the improvement is needed and devoting lessons and/or practice to that. Final piece of advice... My scores dipped below 100 once I made a serious commitment to practicing short game often. All of it from 100 yards in, including putting. All of the people I know who are awesome golfers were insistent on this, and they are right. Get chips/pitches within one putt range, eliminate three putts, you'll be good.

About two years. I played a season before but I didn't keep score or a handicap. Once I started keeping score and not giving myself mullis I would shoot 100, 101, 100, 104, 100 and on and on. Then I shot an 89. Just like that. Two years till I broke 90 again. Welcome to golf.

At a guess I would say it took me around 10-15 rounds to break a 100 but I had quite a few lessons with a coach and a lot time at driving range.

If you want to make fast progress, I would really recommend going to see your coach. You wont find a better improvement pound for pound over him.

    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
    • I got another one today....Number 17. Par 5 that has water left and right on the layup. I smacked a drive down the left side and got a little lazy on the layup and fanned my 6 iron. With 112 to a crowned green I got it to 3 feet and birdie!  Only 5 and 15 is left for this year!
    • Maybe I didn’t explain this properly. Back and front can be confusing.  There was no place in the bunker that didn’t have 2-3 inches of rain water in it, except for a small spot on the slope nearest the pin. If I had dropped there I would be moving 6-7 feet closer to the hole. Since my ball was just inside the bunker, farthest side from the hole, I dropped one club length backward, which brought me out of the bunker. I could not have hit from that deep of water. Are you saying I would have had to take a penalty stroke due to rain water?
    • Day 550, May 5, 2024 Got a good hour in with a typical (for me) two-stick setup: pool noodle angled in front, yardstick on the ground angled 45° behind me.
    • Day 130: Cinco de Mayo Day 7/24 of Full Speed Spectrum training. Difficult training day after struggling to certify my warmup yesterday, and today. Finished 13 mph lower than my training speed on Thursday. Hope to hit some balls today.
