This is the way I've always done it. I omit par, and count each hole on how many it's over or below 4, then add or subtract the total to 36.

Guys, you are talking about computation "tricks".  Common core is a lot more than that.  No matter what "tricks" they teach you, you still have to be able to add up numbers, because they do not always present themselves all organized to for a trick to work, like a golf scorecard.

Estimating values has also seemed to go away with the advent of calculators, computers and lately smart phones. Estimation not just a trick but a quick means of getting an approximation in a time pressing situation. Of course, my kids both type 100 words a minute and text at 25+ words a minute so adding things takes very little time on a smart phone. :-P

The only worry I have is that I will need to learn common core along with my kid to be sure I can help with homework and be sure to help that way. @Golfingdad Do they have materials to learn it on your own? Online resources?

I'm a bogey golfer, so I use 5 on every hole, but same idea. Much easier.
