I've been playing for a couple of years now and feel comfortable enough so that I'm ready to play with other people on a regular basis. I mostly golf with family members or in the occasional golf outing but I've never developed a network of people to play golf with. I don't belong to a club - most of my golf is played at public courses unless I'm invited to play a private venue.

My question probably sounds stupid, but here goes: How do you go about finding people to play golf with? Most of my friends don't golf. Those who do already are firmly in their own groups and since all of us are family men and have jealous wives, there's only so much golf you can play. What's the best way to go about this? Just show up and have the starter pair you up? What have other folks done to meet people who play golf?

I started playing with my brother and some friends. After I improved I started playing regularly with my Father-in-law, his father and a group of about 10-15 guys that played every Sunday morning. It was a great group. We had guys from 15-85 years old and everywhere from scratch to 36. Unfortunately due to a few of the older regulars getting sick and ultimately passing away, the group has gotten smaller. Many of the guys were there because they were related to one of the old timers. Some of the other guys have gotten married, had kids or moved away. We are now back to a mostly family thing again. Our regular group is now My wife's two uncles, her brother, my brother and me. We occasionally have her great uncle out there with us as well.

Our Wednesday league is similar. It's family and friends, but we have a great time with it.

I would suggest that you go to your local course and find out if any of the leagues need an extra. It may be just as a sub, but this can get you in. If you like the group, you may find some regulars to play with.

I'd would say that 90% of my rounds are when I just walk out as a single. I like playing with other people.

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

the sub for a league is a good suggestion. I played league last year and met a lot of nice guys and still play with them currently. I also converted 2 friends who werent players before and now they are calling me to play all the time. Playing as a single has made me only a few people I play with from time to time. I say just get out there and play and you'll fall into something.

Majority of the time I book my tee time for myself and then I'm usually put in a group of 2-3 other guys. I wish I had regular guys to Golf with.

Most courses have a club that you can join that the main benefit of is to get a USGA handicap. The side benefit of joining said club is to play in its events - tournaments, leagues, etc. I recommend joining a club (ask at the pro shop) at a course near your house. Play in some of the events and you'll meet some guys.

My best friend had not been that interested in playing. We had gotten him and his wife out a few times, but he nevfer really got into it. She enjoyed it more than him. This Spring we had an opening in our league and we talked them into joining. He has the bug now and actually wants to play even on days we don't have the league. This weekend we are all going up North and I expect to get in a few rounds with him. I've tried to get him to join us on Sunday mornings, but 7:00 AM is too early for him and he still doesn't think he is quite good enough. I bet by next year he is in.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
