I'm new here, so I wasn't sure the best place to post this. I"m sorry if this is the wrong section.

Anyway, I have been playing for about 3 years. I probably golf around 15-20 times in a year, so I'm really new to playing. I have been playing with a Wilson Set that is ancient. It's probably 20+ years old at least. It was passed down to me, so I have been using those. I"m looking for an upgrade into a newer set, but I wanted to ask around what would be a good set to start with. I just golf with friends for fun, but think it's time I get something more up to date.

Thanks for all those who can help.

I picked up a set of XV Brand clubs when I got back into golf recently. I also know Orlimar puts out an ok set of beginner clubs for a very fair price. Also if you're looking to pick up a used set of a bigger brand craigslist bookoo and other sites like that are great. Just remember as you develop a better more consistent swing you're going to end up wanting the big name quality clubs. At least thats what happened to me.

This is one of the best starter sets I know of - I used mine for 2 years & I can recommend them - they're much cheaper now.     http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-burner-plus-irons.html?&kpid;=40475630000&gclid;=CITvm9biir4CFUNqOgodxCsAdw

+1 Those are an absolute steal at that price!

Lots of new 2013 iron sets can be bought on ebay for less than $300 from legit retailers. The game improvement gear is the cheapest of all of it. I'm not picky about looks but if I was in your shoes I'd look at something like the Adams V4 with 4-5-6 hybrids.

Thanks for the recommendation. That's not a bad price for me at all.

Thanks for the post. I definitely would look for something bigger later down the road. Since I'm a casual golfer with like 15 rounds a year, I would just like something more up to date than the clubs I"m currently using. They are ancient, so anything updated is great for me.

Awesome. I don't know anything about the brands for sets, so that's why I'm asking for ideas. Appreciate the suggestion.

Thanks to all who have chimed in so far.

@MexicanStallion look forward to hearing what you purchase and how you get on with the new set.

And welcome to the site

I play Callaway irons, but when I went for hybrids I got the Adams V4 3H and 4H. The V4 line, as Dave2512 notes, offers an excellent blended set of clubs (hybrids at low end, irons at high end).

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
