Recently came down with a serious case of shanks out of nowhere. Been hitting irons fine until a few days ago when I started shanking everything. I tried the club cover outside the ball drill, but that doesnt work well for me since for some reason it doesnt make me react any different. Anyone have any different techniques for getting back over the shanks?

I had the same thing a couple weeks ago, If your feet are too close together, widen them, bend your knees, and take your right hand and move it more towards the top of your grip and tighten. Im not sure if thats gonna help you, but it sure did me..Most important thing, dont lose confidence when making the shot, it will make you wuss out and not complete it properly.

Dont take little chops at the ball, do a full swing like you used to. Hope this helps ;)

This might sound a little stupid, but don't think about the correct swing; try to keep the clubface square at impact, and a smooth tempo.

break down your swing, in order words start with taking your club back to the 9:00 o'clock position and start smooth chipping strokes, then 3/4' swings, then full swing. feel the tempo. Take it back slowly and follow through.

If the cover drill doesn't work then check your balance. Its likely that you're falling towards the ball on the way down causing the shanks. Is it consistent shanking though?

90% of the time when i shank the ball its because:

A) Too close to the ball
B) Its also to far back in my stance

Try those basic things first instead of changing your swing. Hopefully its one of the above so its a simple fix!

When your hitting the ball well, its quite easy to forget the little basics like ball position when your on a roll, it can get overlooked!

I am a new member to the forum, but once in a while I used to do battle with the shanks. An old club pro gave me advice about three years ago and I don't think I have hit a shank since. As a right handed golfer try to mentally tell yourself to "put" your hands into your right pocket on the downswing. Sounds funny, but it promotes a nice inside out swing plane. Should give you a nice draw! Hope this helps.

thanks for all the input. i went to the range today and i think i figured out what was happening. i heard some tip about putting weight on the balls of your feet at address and i think i just overcompensated to do that and it kept pushing my arms out on the downswing. today i went back to evenly distributing weight on my feet and i started hitting better again but ill have to see how it plays out, never can tell after just one day of success.

I know how you feel, I have the same problem and I know that I am coming down just a little outside to in on the downswing and every now and then it catches me out. If I don't shank it, I often hit it out of the heel. However, I think I might try CheeseWedge's tip and see how that goes.

I also agree that even though the ocassional shank might happen, you have to commit to the shot and keep a good tempo.

various drills,....amd ive got a thread up at the minute as i suffer the shanks on and off, which scares the crap outta me

i went a bit ott this time and did every shank fix int he book at the same time, cus ya know, im a idiot

i quit that crap and just went back to basics and what i know is wrong with my swing, which is its very flat, with a flat shoulder turn

I focused on just getting my left shoulder to the inside of my right foot on the beackswing,...boom shanks gone

    • It feels like Rory blew his load on the 18th at Augusta. Maybe everyone is underestimating how much that took out of him. Watching McGinley whaling in 'Roaddie' for not stopping by to talk to the press was bit of drag. The dude has given so many interviews and so much of himself over the years, he outghta be able to play with house money sometimes. Jeez, leave him the fak alone.
    • Some positives playing in league tonight.  1st) Making the backswing a more lateral shift, and feeling the left leg and torso resist the turn at the top of the swing is helping out a lot. I got to feel an uncomfortable amount of pause in the backswing to set up the downswing.  2) I need to do a bit of more arm stuff better. Still too much draw or pull draws for my liking.  3) Short game is getting sharp. Many tap-ins tonight. I am trying to make the shortest backswing possible for the shot. It really forces me to stay aggressive with the pivot.     
    • Day 43 (12 Jun 25) - Return of the net in the backyard as I set it back up in anticipation of some work with the R10 in coming days.  Used it to hit a few iron shots into the net with the 7i before wrapping up the session with the wedges.  
    • Shame to see Rory crash on the back nine. Nice to Spieth play well. Looking forward to seeing Brooks collapse…😂
    • Day 255 - 2025-06-12 Played 18 holes. Started to over-do the crap out of my thing for holes 9-15 a bit, then refreshed it and finished out really well.
