David Duval

Everything just went wrong for David. If I had to choose 1 golfer that best represents "unlucky" in a career, it would be DD. While it would be amazing if he won again, I don't think he will. I don't even think he'll have another top ten. I still have hope though. :banana:

Yeah Ive fought my feelings over the years. Like why him? The last 13 years I should have been watching one of my favorite athletes have a great career like Phil or Tiger. Even lesser players have done well in that span.

However other players have had similar falls like Mike Weir... he might be the closest but Duval certainly was more of figure than Weir overall.

The other way I looked at it is that what he did in the span of 4-5 years was pretty remarkable. And he did in fact win a major. If he had fallen off before he won his first major it would feel completely incomplete to me, but Im glad he at least got the one. Although you could argue by winning that one he lost his focus. Perhaps had he been like Sergio Garcia and just kept winning 1-2 tournaments a year but no major... would he still be at least chasing the top?

Either way we will never know. Hes one of the most interesting players at an existential level.

Ive been really trying to find a modern player to latch onto like Duval for the last 5-6 years. However I keep bouncing back and forth. Its easier when youre 14 or 15 to latch on I suppose. I enjoy the new crop like Rory and Fowler. But Im not into them at the same level of excitement.

My mothers favorite golfer is Elin Nordegren, so I guess you have me beat. I'd recommend Joost Luiten. He is the unofficial Dutch golfer of the forum. :-D :-P :dance:

Louis Ooshuizen I got into after he won the Open. Just liked his simple nature and kindness in interviews. Hes also got the best swing around. South Africa is one of my favorite countries visited so I follow a few them.

As for the Euros, the crop that has been fun to watch recently - Joost NED, Dubuisson FRA, Kaymer GER, Illonen FIN, and I was really liking Nicolas Coelsarts from Belgium but as soon as he burst onto the scenes hes fallen right off it. Maybe its my fault?

David Duval: Unofficial Reclamation Golfer Of The Sand Trap. ----------- He will certainly shoot 60....I usually have high hopes...then I wake up and see he is +4 through 6 already. Ruins my whole morning.

Certainly is. David in his prime could do anything though. No one was stopping him. A combo of a injuries and real life mental focus took him in a different direction that he was not able to recover from as of yet :)

David's has had some really shitty things happen to him. Brother died young, David blamed himself. His father left the family, rise and fall of his career. Wrist, shoulder, back, vertigo, family problems, difficult pregnancy for his wife. Really sucks to see this happen to a good guy. You've probably read them all, but there are some pretty great "what happened to David Duval" articles out there. ---------- You'll notice I craftily moved this from the Weirsy thread ;-)

I know all about Davids life, certainly lot to overcome. But he hardly ever made excuses about his early life stuff.

I posted it in the Weir thread because their both similar in their current paths in golf life.

However very excited after David being +3 after his first 9 he fired off 4 birdies on the back 9 to finish -1 and likely just make the cut.

Its that ability to score that I still see in him. He can make plenty of birdies. The four bogies on the front are the issue.

But this is definitely nice to see after a rough stretch in the last handful of tournaments. He started the season shooting well and even stated about how excited he was about his game this year. But another injury got in the way.

A top 30 would be a great way to finish this season and hopefully he tries to play in the fall events.

Over the hill golf-wise and people are feeling sorry for poor "David"? Why?

He has had to overcome stuff similar to billions of others. And he succeeded. There is no tragedy here.

I'd like to see him do well, but you can't turn the clock back.
