Okay, so I have to go to Santa Barbara for two weeks for work. I am actually staying in Lompoc cause I am working on Vandenberg AFB.

I am thinking I am going to go play this course....

Have any of you guys played it?? Looks nice, and hard :)

Also, if anyone is in the area and wants to play on the 29th or 30th of September...let me know.

Oh Yes . . .

I used to live right by there and my pop worked at VAFB.

La Purisima is regularly voted as one of the best California courses and it has hosted PGA Tour Q-school some time back. Yes it is difficult. It is rather long from the tips - but it is very cool. You will have great fun!

Try to play in the morning, cause in this area the winds pick up in the afternoon. It has nice elevation changes, it is WIDE open - no houses infringing, and it is not fairways up and back right next to each other. It winds its way through Oaks and scrub, and in and around water features.

Depending on how much time you will have, you could also go to Rancho San Marcos. See their web site at rsm1804.com - I think 1804 was when something they are trying to preserve was begun. Anyway - don't take La Purisima off to play this, but if you can play 2, try it out. It is a nice course between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, Lompoc - kind of a triangle if you will, that is also nestled in the beautiful California oaks and open range - again - no houses anywhere - just open wilderness. Might be a half hour to forty five minutes from Lompoc. The difference in the two courses is the climate. La Purisima is rather close to the ocean. You get the morning fog, dew, chill and afternoon wind and cool temps. San Marcos is well inland and while mornings can be cool, the day time temps are much higher - probably 80's to 100's in summer.

You can't go wrong with either. Very nice places though I have not been to either for around 4 years or so now.

Have fun!

La Purisima is GREAT! Definitely one of my favorite places to play. And yes, it is TOUGH! But that's what is so fun about the place. Always in really nice condition, and never really crowded because it's so far away from anywhere. If you aren't a fan of playing in the wind try to tee off in the morning. There's always a steady wind in the afternoon.

J.P., sounds like you really get around..

    • I'm confused - the team of two is playing a scramble but the single player is playing best of two balls or is he playing a one man scramble with two shots? If the single is best of two balls, then I'd bet on the pair playing a scramble everytime. If it's a two man scramble versus a single person scramble, I'd take the single, at least until fatigue was a factor. Give a regular play two shots and I think he is going to play better than the other two guys. That said, probably works better for the solo for 9 holes than 18. If the solo was smart and self aware of his game, and many of us are not as aware as we should be, he would conserve his energy and not play a second swing after a good shot.
